Computer Literacy - A must-have skill in the Digital Environment
I'm guilty of writing long posts - way too long some say. And for that I will accept. But for a few mins of your time before the start of a new week. I just thought it'd be useful to share one or two nuggets from things I have observed and have experienced in the last few months.
In this time and age, with technology advancement waves leading the way. Computer literacy skills and the ability to operate or complete certain tasks using a computer is a must-have skill for all of us. Honestly, with where the world is going, the digital space is the new norm. And its a space that calls for us to be smart and seek ways to complete tasks with efficiency and effectively. Most jobs today are based around the use of software's, computers, CRMs, web based systems etc. And without computer knowledge it becomes a challenge to be effective in your operations or at a personal level.
I wouldn't be sure of the exact costs that colleges are charging for basic computer skills training's at the moment - I will make time and research further so that I can share more on it in my next post. But I would strongly suggest that we get ourselves acquainted with some basic knowledge on how to operate certain systems, how to use a desktop, a laptop, the software's available eg MS Office, Adobe, etc. Especially for fellow brothers and sisters that are looking to move abroad or even seek employment locally. It is important to have computer skills hama dzangu.
Typing skills are not for those who seek administrative roles only. Its a basic skill that we all should have. I am not the best at typing but I know I am competitive and can manage, and that's good enough. And with the availability of the internet, you can utilize YouTube to watch tutorials for instance. There are thousands and thousands of tutorials available online, which can be of help. Whether you want to learn how to operate MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc, or maybe you want to learn more about a certain software or system that you use. The tutorials are available, and you can learn or get a basic understanding of how to navigate and use that tool that you want. It's an alternative if paying for a complete course is expensive. Because yes, I acknowledge resources may be a challenge. But with data available or even someone that you know is good at computers. Be it at school, our work spaces etc. In your spare time, ask them to help you so that next time you are the one doing it yourself.
I, for one, have learned a number of things on computers through observing someone doing it, and I note how they operated. But it all takes a keen interest from self, to learn these things. For my fellow sisters - NB: I am not picking on woman or being bias, but they constitute the greater percentage of the demography that I have interacted with or have come in contact with in the past few months, and they either face challenges or do not have an idea on how to use computers, typing or using systems on a computer. I strongly recommend that you take time to develop computer skills as a way to enhance and improve yourself. You are doing it for yourself not the next person.
Science or technology is not for the boys or the boy child only. Let's allow our children to learn some of these things at an early age. Such that they grow exposed to a lot of technology and systems that are available to make their work easier or, to be specific, help to make them more productive and do their work with efficiency.

So why am I saying this. Do you know a lot of the tasks we do in our daily lives can be completed by a computer. My time with a certain organization opened me up to further knowledge on what I could complete and achieve using Excel and PowerPoint for instances. Skills that I wouldn't have known if I had not been keen to understand them. I am not a specialist in the field but I know if I have a presentation or data that I have to present, I know the tools to use and the like. And it is in the same light and my experience in other spaces that has shown me that some individuals (both man and women) shun acquiring these soft skills and yet they are key in our day-to-day lives and especially with the time that we are living.
It really pains me to see someone being affected on a life changing opportunity simply because they didn't know or understand how to fully utilize a basic computer skill. It infuriates me and, at the same time, draws so much sympathy. Because I know if they had understood how to operate this device or software, they would get an equal chance to at least compete with others and equally get opportunities that can transform their lives. At times, incompetence in our jobs is simply because we are too traditional and are still using old ways to do things, yet vast systems and ways are available to help us. And can even minimize errors in our work.
I have so much to say. But my main point here is that. Let's be open to change, open to learning new skills, and develop ourselves in this digital environment that we are living in. Computer skills are a must-have for all of us because that is the age we are in now. Make it a point that you learn something new. And if you struggle with computers, please I implore that this year, in the next 2 months, make it a point that you learn how to use and operate a one. Even your smart phone. It's not designed to work for social media only, but to aid to your daily life. So, use it that way.
