I write stories about coaching in practice in schools and classrooms

This story is about a young teacher called Nova.

Nova was tired of the continuous struggle of talking to students who were resisting her best efforts to teach them English Literature. She was beginning to think about leaving the profession, but maybe this coaching idea could be something?

She decided to test it out. She has heard that using a coaching approach - pulling instead of pushing - will make her lessons more engaging and her students more engaged. Let’s see.

Active Listening

This skill is actually a whole set of tools. During the coming weeks, add one new skill each time and observe the effect it has on your learners.

  • Paraphrasing, briefly repeating back what you heard using their words
  • Open-ended questions, these cannot be answered with yes / no or some simple facts. They explore what the learners are thinking.
  • Verbalizing emotions, say what you see and hear is going on at an emotional level for the learner
  • Verbal affirmations, let your learners know you are listening by making sounds, but not speaking
  • Clarifying, ask questions to gain clarity, their clarity, not yours
  • Encouraging, giving support when the learners are struggling to find the words to say what they are thinking and feeling.

About Teachers who Coach

TwC is a transnational, not-for-money, virtual organisation that is working to develop teachers' coaching mindset and skills.

We are located in countries all around the World. We are coaches AND teachers. We have qualifications and experience from both professions. We have seen the benefits for you and your learners.

  • We reach out to coaches and invite them to volunteer their time, at no cost, to educators.
  • We connect teachers and school leaders with the volunteer certified coaches.
  • We gather and create useful resources for coaching in schools and classrooms,
  • and we share them for free.

All coaching conversations are private and confidential, carried out by professional non-directive coaches. No notes are taken. No bills are sent.
