Closing the health equity gap for Latinas in the U.S.

Closing the health equity gap for Latinas in the U.S.

Higher rates of HPV and lupus. Twice the death rate from cervical cancer. 17% of new AIDS diagnoses among women. 17 times more likely to die from diabetes. Imagine these statistics disproportionately impacting your mother, sister, partner, friend, or any woman you know. At MiSalud Health, we face these disparities with our socias (what we call our members) everyday because these statistics are the reality TODAY for Latinas in the U.S.

These health disparities are a result of social inequities that limit Latinas' access to healthcare. Language and cultural factors limit the impact of the traditional U.S. healthcare system, where doctors lack the amigable (personalism) to build confianza (trust) with Latinas. At MiSalud Health, we believe access, culturally appropriate care, and a support system for Latinas are the keys to thriving in a safe environment that fosters better health.

Access to healthcare is crucial. Latinas face numerous barriers to accessing care, including lack of time, childcare, insurance, and financial resources. Virtual care solutions like MiSalud Health helps overcome these barriers, allowing Latinas to receive care the same day and from the privacy of their own phone. Virtual care from the MiSalud Care Team is affordable – often paid for by employers as the frontline to traditional health insurance and also available for as low as $10 per month.

Culturally appropriate care is essential. Language barriers are a significant hurdle to communicating personal health issues, and cultural factors affect health outcomes. At MiSalud Health, our Care Team is 80%+ Latinas with a variety of lived experiences. We offer culturally appropriate care in Spanish and English, and recognize how each of our socias’ generational beliefs, biases, and behaviors may affect their health.

A support system is vital to achieving and maintaining good health. The MiSalud Care Team provides education, guidance and act as accountability partners for socias on their health journey – one that we don’t believe should be taken alone. It is therefore our mission to be with our socias every step of the way.

On #internationalwomensday, and everyday at MiSalud Health, we recognize the unique health challenges faced by Latinas in the U.S and work tirelessly to change the system. We offer the essential components to overcome these challenges and ensure that all women have access to the healthcare they need and deserve. At MiSalud Health, we are working side-by-side with our socias to live a healthier tomorrow.
