The Mid-Level Leadership Trap

Burnout vs. Boredom—Know the Signs

Burnout:

Constant exhaustion

Anxiety about workload

Feeling overwhelmed

Boredom:

Feeling underused or invisible

Disengagement or detachment

Apathy about outcomes

Sometimes they overlap. Boredom can feel like burnout. And both lead to one thing: feeling stuck.

Why This Happens

  • You’ve outgrown your current role—but haven’t outlived it.
  • You’ve become so reliable, you’re no longer challenged.
  • The organization relies on you as you are—not who you're becoming.
  • No clear path upward or outward = leadership limbo.

What to Do About It

Here’s what I share with my coaching clients who feel stuck:

  1. Reconnect with your “Why” → What did this role unlock for you when you first stepped into it?
  2. Have a career conversation with yourself → Is it time to lead differently, or lead somewhere new?
  3. Shift from Execution to Strategy → How can you bring more innovation, ownership, or thought leadership into your current lane?
  4. Invest in Growth → Coaching, mentorship, or stretch assignments that push you beyond your day-to-day.

Feeling stuck doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re ready. Ready for more alignment, more clarity, and more meaningful leadership.

And the first step? Recognizing whether you’re burnt out… or just bored.
