Building Resilience: The Three-Point Strategy for Navigating Change
In today's workplace, change isn't just inevitable—it's constant. According to recent research, while 68% of organisations reported experiencing disruptive change in the past year, only 16% felt fully prepared to navigate it effectively (McKinsey Global Resilience Report, 2023). Your ability to adapt impacts both professional success and personal wellbeing.
The Three-Point Strategy for Personal Resilience
As I detail in my book Weathering the Storm: A Guide to Building Resilient Teams , resilience isn't a fixed trait but a set of learnable skills (Davidson & Begley, 2024). In Chapter Three, I outline this three-point strategy that functions like a sturdy three-legged stool providing stability even on the shakiest ground:
1. Clarity of Purpose
When we have a clear sense of purpose—our "why"—it serves as a powerful compass during turbulent times. Recent studies show that purpose-driven individuals demonstrate 42% greater resilience when facing workplace disruptions (Thompson et al., Journal of Positive Psychology, 2023).
During the pandemic when coaching engagements were suddenly cancelled, I reconnected with my purpose: "to unlock human potential, build growth strategies, and create resilient mindsets." This clarity inspired creative solutions for supporting teams virtually rather than remaining paralysed by uncertainty.
Your purpose doesn't need to be grandiose—it simply needs to be meaningful to you. When you know your "why," you can navigate almost any "how."
2. Daily Habits for Resilience
Resilience is cultivated through consistent daily practices. Research shows individuals who maintain structured resilience practices are 3.4 times more likely to adapt positively following disruptions (Seligman & Matthews, Nature Human Behaviour, 2023). Focus on these evidence-backed practices:
Practice Gratitude: Neuroscience confirms that gratitude activates the brain's learning centers while reducing stress response (Emmons & McCullough, UC Berkeley, 2024). Take two minutes each morning to note three things you're grateful for.
Celebrate Successes: Teams who systematically acknowledge achievements demonstrate 37% higher resilience during change (Harvard Business Review, 2023). Make recognising victories, large and small, a regular practice.
Reflective Practice: Structured reflection has been identified as the strongest predictor of adaptive responses to workplace disruption (Duckworth & Gross, Psychological Science, 2024). Schedule consistent time for deeper exploration of experiences.
Mindfulness: Even simple practices like box breathing (4-count inhale, hold, exhale, and pause) produce immediate measurable changes in brain activity associated with improved focus and reduced stress (MIT Neuroimaging Lab, 2023).
3. Building a Supportive Community
Research confirms that the quality of one's social network is the single strongest predictor of resilience during organisational change, outweighing factors like experience, education, and personality traits (Luthar & Cicchetti, Science, 2023).
My experience becoming a foster carer highlighted this truth. Despite thorough preparation, my wife and I faced unexpected emotional challenges welcoming a child who had experienced significant trauma. Our close friends' unwavering support proved invaluable, contributing to a successful placement.
A strong community provides:
Applying the Three-Point Strategy During Change
Research shows professionals who activate all three resilience factors are 4.2 times more likely to maintain performance and wellbeing during change (Workplace Resilience Study, Deloitte, 2024):
Reflection Question
Which leg of your "resilience stool" needs the most reinforcement right now? What one small step could you take this week to strengthen it?
This article is based on insights from my book "Weathering the Storm: A Guide to Building Resilient Teams," specifically the three-point strategy for personal resilience detailed in Chapter 3: Creating Personal Resilience (pp. 57-77).

15hLove the grounded, evidence-led approach here. When I coach leaders through turbulent change, it’s often the simple but consistent habits that keep them steady—not grand gestures. One exec I worked with literally stuck their purpose statement on the kettle. Brew time became reflect-and-reset time. Funny how the right rituals can be more powerful than the right strategy, isn’t it?
