The legal workforce is ageing at pace – in some regions of the UK, more than 60% of solicitors are over 50

And this ageing workforce presents a different set of challenges for employers. Childcare demands are likely to be replaced by adult care responsibilities – whether that’s looking after a parent or a partner.

Some 8% of solicitors say they’re already caring for another adult – and in reality, that figure could be far higher.

“We recognise that many of our colleagues have caregiving responsibilities, so we’ve taken steps to create a workplace where they feel supported and valued in managing these dual responsibilities,” explains Victoria Hand , Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Manager at Bristows.

The specialist global law firm has recently joined forces with KareHero to help its employees navigate the complexities of adult caregiving alongside their employment responsibilities. Here, Victoria explains the steps they’ve taken to create a workplace where staff feel supported and valued.

Does Bristows have a history of supporting its employee caregivers?

We already had a carers policy, flexible working, compassionate leave, and an employee assistance programme. However, we realised that these measures, while helpful, didn’t fully address the unique and evolving challenges caregivers face, such as navigating the complexities of care, finding reliable resources, or managing emotional and financial stress. Curious to see how we could further assist, we were keen to explore other tools that might provide more comprehensive, proactive support beyond standard policies.

Does caregiver support tie into any wider business initiatives?

We recognise that caregiving responsibilities impact individuals across all demographics and we want to sustain the environment we have at Bristows where everyone, regardless of their personal circumstances, can thrive professionally.

We explored expanding our internal policies and partnering with external organisations specialising in caregiver assistance. Our ambition was to find a solution that was not just a short-term fix but a long-term investment in our people’s wellbeing.

We are always curious about innovative solutions that can make a real difference, and KareHero stood out as a unique and proactive way to provide practical and emotional support to caregivers. We were particularly drawn to KareHero’s practicality, accessibility, and personalised support.

“It wasn’t just another generic benefit. The service provides real, tangible resources to help caregivers navigate their challenges with confidence. We couldn’t find anything else on the market that does the same thing, making it an easy decision.”

Since launching in January 2025, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Employees appreciate that we are acknowledging their challenges and providing meaningful support. Some have shared that they feel seen, valued, and relieved to have expert guidance at their fingertips.

“In this time, we’ve seen a 10% take up of KareHero among our employees. This initiative has helped to strengthen our overall commitment to being a truly supportive and inclusive employer.”

Would you recommend KareHero?

Absolutely. We believe that brave businesses don’t just talk about supporting their people, they take action. KareHero has helped us turn our values into meaningful, everyday support for our employees. For any organisation looking to truly empower and retain its workforce, investing in caregiver support is a step worth taking.
