Boxes to Check When Starting New

Boxes to Check When Starting New

Moving on is never easy. After some 15+ years at Determine (Selectica and Iasta), which is a lifetime in software terms, I have decided to try something a little different and new. During these past years, I have worked with some fantastic people, learned so much, and established lifelong friendships. However, it was time to move on.

Moving to a new employer is a big change, so the decision was not taken lightly. I had to spend time digging deep and to trying to understand the environment where I would work best and could contribute the most. This was not an easy process and I found it far more challenging than I ever anticipated. However, during this period of soul searching I settled on a few core themes, which if present in any potential role increases the likelihood of future success:

·      Culture. Working in an organization that connects people through an overriding and uniting purpose is key. Being able to believe in this purpose, understand its uniqueness, and articulate its benefits are all crucial parts. Such an environment would ideally allow me to express opinions, be respected for my views, and ultimately be encouraged to be part of the solution. It struck me that I am at my most effective when the culture is in sync with these characteristics.

·      Alignment. When the entire organization is focused on the key corporate objectives, there is complete alignment throughout the organization on these shared (not competing) goals. For me, customer success is always at the top of the alignment list. But more importantly, an organization should define what success looks like at every level and reward individuals on achieving this success.

·      Competitive advantage. Having a position in any market which is unique, whether it be in the form of a product, service, or geographical location, is a key element that bolsters the likelihood of future success. Being able to position the offer in a way that the solution is relevant while also solving real business problems is a really satisfying place to be. However, without culture and alignment, having a competitive advantage will only take an organization so far.  For me, all three—culture, alignment, and competitive advantage—need to be evident.

·      Something new. Focusing on something new is a way to re-energize and grow. A new project or career move has the ability expand and test capabilities. It can further develop existing skills, force you to learn new ones, and dust off the old ones. I felt I needed to push myself into an uncomfortable new place.

So, why Basware?

Culture. When working in Europe, I worked alongside many Baswareans and was always impressed with their sense of purpose. The culture was strong, but I realized the US was different. Having met the team here I picked up on a distinct culture emerging in the US Basware organization. It has taken the global core and added US flavors – perfect!

Alignment. I have found many software providers often struggled with competing both in Europe and the US. They’re usually successful in one geography yet struggle in the other. When meeting the Basware US team, I was pleasantly surprised at how the approach to the US market was different and much more aligned to the local market needs. The shared goals of customer success exist at every level and are measured monthly – fantastic.

Competitive advantage. Basware is the undisputed world leader in invoice automation. Tick that box.

Something new. Finally, it’s something new. I have always worked with partners, but generally it was part of a broader role. However, for Basware US is embarking on a brand-new endeavor backed by a global corporate objective. Having the opportunity to develop a rich partner network with a great team of professionals is exciting, challenging, and uncomfortable. Check.

So, in summary I am thrilled to join such a strong organization with a real sense of purpose. I have met some super talented people, gained a great set of skills, and am now thoroughly looking forward to contributing to the success of Basware. I wish my colleagues and the customers that I leave behind my best wishes and success for the future. Here goes…. watch this space.

Excellent article Sean and thought provoking as well.  As I approach the completion of my first six months in a new organisation, I've reflected as to the key reasons why I joined and can relate to Culture, Alignment, Competitive Advantage and Something New as been the drivers to make the final decision.
