Darby Derrex is at a bit of a crossroads in her life. In her mid-forties with a failed career, not to mention a few unsuccessful relationships, Darby’s world suddenly changes when she inherits a record store from her recently deceased Uncle. But while she is kind of enjoying her new life filled with music of the past, she longs for something different, and even pines for the good ol’ days when she worked as a music critic at City Scene, a small newspaper in Chicago back in the ‘90s.

The memories of a great, yet often complicated time, remain in Darby's mind until, one day, she discovers a mysterious watch that leads her to a hidden line in the Chicago subway system. Once aboard the time-traveling subway, Darby quickly makes the decision to have it take her back to the 1990s where she is given the ultimate opportunity to not only experience music and concerts she missed, but to relive her life, and redo the decisions she’s been second-guessing for decades. The only catch is time is ticking on the watch; Darby only has 90 days to make a critical decision. Should she stay and enjoy the past and move on, back to the present, or should she remain in the past, and try to recreate it?

Author Andy Frye’s Ninety Days in the 90s is a well-written, wildly entertaining jam-packed nostalgic trip back to what many believe to be the best decade ever. Whether you too were a fan of the ‘90s or not (or were even around to remember), Frye energetically weaves a fun and engrossing story that everyone can relate to at some point in their lives. What if you could go back in time and relive your past? Would you just go back to relive your glory years? Fix mistakes you’ve made? And would you want to return to the present? While time travel is definitely not a new concept, Frye writes from a fresh perspective with a slightly unexpected twist towards the end that may surprise readers. Although time travel is obviously fictitious and can’t really happen (at least at this point in time), this reader had a bit of a hard time suspending disbelief, and following the actual time-traveling parts of the story, because it felt somewhat rushed. While this issue is minor, perhaps explaining and expanding upon the time-traveling elements would round out the story even more, but should not dissuade anyone from hopping aboard to read and experience the fun, nostalgic ride of Ninety Days in the 90s.
