Being Obese is OK! But do you know what you have missed out in life, if you are not?

Being Obese is OK! But do you know what you have missed out in life, if you are not?

For the large part of my adult life, I was obese. Did I feel alright being obese? Was I OK with colleagues and friends calling me Mr Fat or Fat Bum? Indeed I felt OK, I did not mind others calling me nicknames. In fact to me , these were endearing terms. I slept well, ate well, able to jog 5 km with ease, seldom got sick, able to function well in my daily work and chores. The clothes that I bought would just have to be bigger to fit my body. Being obese was actually no big deal, nothing critical to life as I thought back then. I knew of published statistics of the top-listed diseases which stated obesity as the main probable cause (international and local reports were very much similar), but so what, these figures were just figures and did not connect with me. I did not feel the need to lose weight, in fact, I felt healthy! So long that you accept being obese, there is nothing wrong with it.

Those who are obese will not know how much can be gained by trimming down that few or tens of kilograms. To obese people, we simply love food and will not give up our indulgence. Do you know that you have greater capacity to indulge and manage your food and drinks, if you have a better trimmer fitter healthier body? Now I can run long distance or do an intense workout to burn off excess calories. I have also learnt to make room for indulgence. Simply put, I have rebuilt my capacity to eat!

When I was obese and in my early 40s, I was diagnosed with fatty liver, high cholesterol levels and my blood pressure was borderline high. I did not feel any symptoms as these did not impact my daily life at all. Some would ask whether I felt tired, and I did not feel so too, perhaps it was because it was normal to be tired after a long day at work, spending hours in meetings and at the computer. Perhaps I was oblivious to many things that could happen. Health was definitely not a priority, and I believe that "wish you good health" is good enough to be in good health.

Then at 46 years old, I was "accosted" at a roadshow to do a wellness evaluation analysis. Nothing surprised me at the readings, except for one - Metabolism age at 71. This meant that I had low metabolism and my first and naive concern was how to eat more and enjoy as I could not metabolise my food away. This started my journey on 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. During this journey, I did not give up food that I enjoy. Instead, I learnt how to manage the indulgence. Before I knew it, I lost 18 kg in 4 months.

Medically, I did not have fatty liver issues anymore, my cholesterol and blood pressure levels were back to norm.

Energy? I did not know what I had missed for so many many years. Energy level was back to my young days as an undergrad!

Clothes? At last, I am able to get into nicer looking slim-fit shirts and pants. Sharper dressing to impress and attract!

Looks? Many people remarked that I did not look my age!

Food? I am a foodie at heart. Once you get back good health, I believe that we can enjoy and indulge a much much longer while.
