In the latest episode of All-in on Gaming, Joseph (Mitton) Lohmann sat down with Simon Thomas , Executive Chairman of the The Hippodrome Casino in London, to discuss the venue's evolution and the exciting future of UK gaming. As the Hippodrome celebrates its 125th anniversary, Simon shares how the iconic casino has become a multifaceted entertainment hub. However, beyond the entertainment, one of the most significant themes discussed was how changing UK regulations could reshape the gaming industry, making way for a more innovative and customer-friendly future.

While entertainment and social engagement remain at the heart of the Hippodrome's success, the changing regulatory landscape will play a key role in shaping the future of UK casinos. "Casinos are one of the few places in the UK where you have to use cash," Simon points out, highlighting how outdated regulations are affecting the customer experience. "The size of the market will mean more manufacturers, more choice for the customers," he says, explaining that once regulations are updated, UK casinos will have access to more advanced gaming machines and experiences that customers have come to expect from other countries.

As the Hippodrome continues to innovate, technology plays a key role in enhancing the customer experience. "Innovation is a key part of the Hippodrome's strategy," Simon explains. From facial recognition for player protection to cashless payment options, the casino is constantly looking for ways to improve convenience and safety.

Despite the potential for disruption, Simon is clear that the goal of regulatory changes is to improve the customer experience, not make it harder. "Everything we do impacts our customers," Simon says, explaining that any changes must enhance their enjoyment and sense of safety. For instance, the upcoming deregulation could help solve logistical challenges, such as customers waiting too long for gaming machines or worrying about leaving their machines unattended.

One of the key aspects of the regulatory changes will be how they open the door for more innovation within the casino space, and the Hippodrome plans to integrate new gaming machines and expanded offerings as soon as regulations are updated. Simon believes that these changes will bring about a new era for customer engagement. With more choices in terms of gaming options and payment methods, customers will have a much more personalized experience, one that aligns with their modern preferences.

At the core of Simon’s philosophy is a deep commitment to putting people first. He sees the evolving regulatory environment as a way to enhance customer satisfaction. "Our thought process starts with; how do we want our customers to feel? And we build from that," he says. By adapting to new regulations and leveraging technology, the Hippodrome aims to create an environment where customers can enjoy a seamless, enjoyable experience—from the games to the food and everything in between.

While embracing new technologies and adapting to upcoming regulatory changes, he remains focused on providing an authentic, memorable experience for all who visit. As the UK’s gaming industry continues to evolve, Simon and the Hippodrome are well-positioned to lead the charge, setting a new standard for what a modern casino can offer.
