Most people think of AI as something that solves math problems or writes code. But what happens when it starts writing stories that move us?
That’s exactly what’s happening.
In a recent SOLVD webinar, Evan Connell, Consulting Manager at SOLVD, shared news about OpenAI’s newest creative writing model—and what it means for the future of artificial intelligence.
Teaching AI to Think, Not Just React
Until now, many AI models have been great at doing tasks where there’s a clear right answer—like math. But creative work, like writing a short story, doesn’t have a single “correct” answer. So how does an AI know it’s doing well?
“This is big news because it shows reinforcement learning is moving beyond math and code,” – Evan Connell, SOLVD Consulting Manager
Reinforcement learning teaches an AI to think through a problem step-by-step. It learns which paths lead to good results and tries to follow those paths again. But that’s easy with math, where the answer is clear. It’s much harder with creative tasks.
Still, OpenAI’s new model wrote a 1,200-word short story called A Machine-Shaped Hand. And even though not everyone loved it, many people did.
“I read it—it is, in my opinion, quite beautiful.” – Evan Connell, SOLVD Consulting Manager
That’s the key point. When people react differently to a piece of writing, it means it’s hitting something real. That’s exactly what good creative work does.

Why This Matters for Businesses
You might be wondering—how does this help your business?
Here’s the big takeaway: AI is getting better at understanding human thinking. It’s not just following formulas anymore. It’s starting to reason, create, and adapt. That means better tools for marketing, customer service, sales, and more.
AI tools of the near future won’t just complete tasks—they’ll help teams make smarter decisions, faster.
Competition Is Heating Up
It’s not just OpenAI making moves. Baidu, a leading tech company in China, launched Ernie X1—a model that performs like top American AI tools but at half the cost.
“The cost to reach the same performance is dropping fast,” – Evan Connell, SOLVD Consulting Manager
That means AI is getting more powerful and more affordable at the same time.
The Bottom Line
Creative AI is no longer a future concept. It’s here. And it’s learning faster than ever.
If you lead a team or business, now is the time to start thinking about how AI can help you work smarter, not harder.
