From whimsical cityscapes to anime-like avatars, users around the globe have been sharing personalized, stylized portraits created using ChatGPT's new image-generation capabilities. The viral trend became so intense that OpenAI’s platform reportedly experienced downtime, prompting CEO Sam Altman to plead with users to “please chill.”

But behind the charm of Ghibli-inspired creations lies a growing concern among privacy professionals: Are users unknowingly trading their privacy for aesthetic appeal?

According to OpenAI’s privacy policy, the company collects personal data entered by users to train its AI models—unless users actively opt out. This means that text prompts, uploaded images, and other voluntarily shared data may be retained and used for future model improvement.

Data privacy expert Anil Patil warns, “Images shared with AI platforms can be manipulated or misused. Users need to be aware that they’re not just interacting with a tool—they’re feeding a system that learns from and potentially retains their inputs.”
