The AI Behind Hiring: Strategies to Stand Out
When people hear “AI in recruitment,” they often imagine robots doing interviews or some high-tech system magically choosing the perfect candidate. But in reality, AI has been quietly working behind the scenes of your job search for years now and it plays a bigger role than most people realise in whether your application actually gets seen by a human eye.
CNBC reports that "75% of resumes are never seen by a human due to AI filtering"
AI is Your Resumes First Audience
When recruiters post a job ad, depending on the platform and the type of ad it’s not unusual to receive hundreds of applications. Five years ago, a recruiter might’ve manually reviewed every resume. Now, with the sheer volume of applications (sometimes hundreds for a single role), AI does the first round of filtering.
Platforms like SEEK, LinkedIn and Applicant Tracking Systems in the back end use AI screening tools to automatically rank or filter applications based on relevance. These systems look for keywords to decide who makes the first cut or is the most relevant.
Think of AI as your resume’s first audience. If a job ad says ‘financial modelling’ and that term is missing from your resume, you could be filtered out, no matter how great you are at it.
🔍 Here’s how to stay in the game:
SEEK's Labour Market Balance Report 2024 says "There are still jobs out there for those searching but they are not as plentiful as they were. It is taking 10 weeks longer for the average job seeker to find a job and there is more competition for roles."
Not All Job Ads Are Equal
Platforms also use algorithms to decide which job ads you see first. Sponsored ads (i.e., ones companies pay extra to boost) tend to show up higher in search results. They get more clicks, but they also attract more competition. These platforms also use machine learning to personalise your feed, based on your clicks, searches, and profile. So the more you engage, the smarter the system gets at recommending roles suitable for you.

Keep Your SEEK & LinkedIn Profiles Updated and Visible
Your online profiles aren’t just your log in to apply for roles, they are searchable and these platforms use your profile data (skills, location, activity) to suggest jobs, match you with recruiters, and pre-screen you in the background. Recruiters often don’t need to post ads at all they’re using search tools within platforms to find candidates with updated resumes, relevant skills, and profiles flagged by AI recommendations.
Here’s what to do:
Clicking ‘Apply’ Isn’t the Only Way to Get Noticed
AI tools are good at matching skillsets, but they can’t build trust, read between the lines, or remember a great conversation from six months ago.
Some of the best hires we have made came through ongoing conversations, not formal applications. AI might surface your resume, but its relationships that open doors and help you stand out in a sea of algorithm sorted candidates.
So:
AI isn’t out to sabotage your job search but it is shaping it. Understanding how it works behind the scenes can give you an edge over others who are just clicking and hoping.
It’s still people who make the final hiring decision. But with the right strategy, your resume has a much better chance of getting in front of them.
