Leading with Purpose: Reflections from 10 Years of Growth

Part 2: Adversity, Adaptation & the Power of Showing Up

Leadership isn’t forged in perfect conditions. It’s shaped in the chaos, the pivots, and the moments where everything feels uncertain — and still, you choose to keep going.

Over the last decade, I’ve walked through seasons of great momentum but also moments of deep pressure. From the early growing pains of building a remote-first company to navigating a global pandemic and adapting to rapidly changing client needs, I’ve had to grow alongside the business as a founder, as a leader, and as a person.

One thing I’ve learned: leadership is less about having all the answers and more about creating the conditions for growth. That means showing up when you don’t feel ready. Listening when it’s uncomfortable. Holding space for your team when they’re navigating their own storms.

During the pandemic, there were times when my team needed clarity, but also compassion. I had to become the calm in the storm, even when I was unsure myself. What carried me through were a few mindset shifts that continue to shape how I lead:

Adaptability over perfection

In business, things rarely go to plan. Success comes not from rigid execution but from responsive, intentional change. Let go of “perfect” and embrace “better every day.”

Consistency over charisma

You don’t need to be the loudest voice in the room. You just need to be the one who shows up, over and over again, with clarity, empathy, and follow-through.

Purpose over panic

When everything feels overwhelming, go back to your core purpose. Why did you start? Who are you here to serve? That becomes your anchor in high-stress moments.

Progress over pressure

Growth isn’t always dramatic. It’s often slow, steady, and behind the scenes. Celebrate those quiet wins; they’re building something lasting.

These aren’t just leadership lessons; they’re life lessons. And they’ve helped shape the culture we’re proud of at VA Connect today.

What you can do:

If you’re facing a tough season - whether in business or life - start here:

  • Reconnect with your purpose.
  • Take one small step forward every day.
  • Ask for support; you don’t have to carry it all alone.
  • Reflect on what’s working — and let go of what isn’t.
  • And most importantly, keep showing up.

Adversity doesn’t break you — it refines you. You’re growing in ways you can’t yet see. And your consistency? That’s your power.
