5 Top Tips for Stress Awareness Month: Understanding, Managing and Overcoming Stress

In honour of Stress Awareness Month this April, we believe it's important to shed light on stress, its impacts, and viable ways to manage it. According to their recent press release: "In the UK, 79% of adults experience stress at least once a month, with 74% feeling overwhelmed or unable to cope at some point in the past year." This highlights the importance of stress management in our everyday lives.

Understanding Stress

Stress is often dubbed the "health epidemic of the 21st century" by the World Health Organisation. It's a normal psychological and physical response to the demands of life. A small amount can be beneficial, motivating us to perform well. However, multiple challenges daily, such as meeting work deadlines, fulfilling family responsibilities, and managing health issues, can push us into the realms of harmful stress.

Here are some ‘Top Tips’ to deal with stress:

  1. Understand what triggers your stress: By understanding what triggers your stress, you can create avoidance tactics or develop coping mechanisms.
  2. Keep active: Regular physical activity can boost your mood and act as a natural stress reliever.
  3. Stay connected: Maintaining social connections can be a powerful stress buffer.
  4. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness can help you stay centred and avoid becoming overwhelmed by stressful situations.
  5. Prioritise Good Sleep: Stress and sleep have a two-way relationship. High levels of stress can lead to insomnia and poor sleep quality, which in turn can increase stress levels.
