5 things we learned at Web Summit 2016

The DHD team had an absolute blast during Web Summit in Lisbon at the start of November. During our 4 days we met a lot of people and learned a lot of things, here’s a few we thought we would share with you!

LESSON #1

Innovation isn’t always something new, sometimes it’s just something useful.

As we walked around the start-up stands we saw people employing technology from useful software to VR experiences. Many start-ups were using the technology which has been in place for a while, and had learned how to use it to take their industries forward, making something that will be flexible and scalable for years to come.

LESSON #2

Lisbon is a hub for some amazing startups.

Each evening we got to enjoy the beautiful sights, food and friendly locals of Lisbon, but behind this chilled-out city there is an exciting and growing tech scene that has recently been dubbed ‘Europe’s West Coast’. With Web Summit committing to return for 2017 & 2018, watch this space!

LESSON #3

There is always something new to learn from someone new.

Web Summit has a lot to offer, world class speakers, amazing pitching opportunities for start ups but what we really enjoy is the simplicity of meeting hundreds of new people from across the globe doing amazing things with technology. There is always something to learn from every conversation we have with someone new!

LESSON #4

You can never eat enough Portuguese custard tarts.

We were introduced to the infamous custard tarts from the moment we arrived in Lisbon and fell in love immediately, during the next 3 days we consumed a lot of these beautiful treats - highly recommended :)

LESSON #5

Don’t be afraid to aim for the moon - shot.

One of the stand out moments for us was to hear Hyperloop One cofounders Josh Giegel (left) and Shervin Pishevar speaking about the journey of this ground breaking transport company.

It’s hard not to be inspired by their vision and determination. The company announced earlier this month that it has signed a deal with the United Arab Emirates to build the word’s first hyperloop system to whisk people along the 99 miles between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in 12 minutes. So don’t be afraid to aim for the moon!
