The 3 Principles of Coaching: Transforming Client Journeys Through Understanding and Hypnotherapy
Coaching is a non-static process that helps individuals achieve their personal and professional goals. Central to this process are three core principles: Mind, Consciousness, and Thought. These principles, originating from Sydney Banks's work, offer a profound yet simple framework for understanding how human experience is created and how it can be transformed. This article will detail these principles and demonstrate their application in a typical coaching session enriched with hypnotherapy for deeper understanding.
Understanding the 3 Principles
1. Mind's principle of Mind refers to the universal intelligence that underlies all life. It is the source of infinite creative potential and wisdom. In the context of coaching, the mind represents every individual's inner resourcefulness and resilience. Recognizing this allows clients to tap into their innate wisdom and navigate challenges more quickly and confidently.
2. Consciousness Consciousness is the principle that brings our thoughts to life, allowing us to perceive and experience the world. It acts as a lens through which we view our reality. In coaching, understanding the role of Consciousness helps clients realise that their perception of any situation is not fixed but is shaped by their current state of Mind. This awareness will lead to a profound shift in how they experience their problems and possibilities.
3. Thought The principle of Thought emphasises that our reality is created from the inside out through our thinking. Every feeling, mood, or experience originates from our thoughts. By understanding this, clients learn they are not at the mercy of external circumstances. Instead, they can change their experience by changing their thinking.
Application in Coaching
To illustrate how these principles work in a coaching context, let's consider a coaching session with a client named Saoirse. Saoirse is a mid-level manager who feels overwhelmed by her responsibilities and struggles to balance her professional and personal life.
Initial Session
Dr Terry: "Hi, Saoirse. It's great to see you. Tell me, what's been on your Mind lately?"
Saoirse: "Hi, Dr Terry. I've been feeling so stressed out. My workload is overwhelming, and I constantly fail to meet everyone's expectations at work and home."
Dr Terry: "I hear you, Saoirse. It sounds like you're carrying a heavy burden. Let's take a moment to explore what's behind these feelings. Can you tell me more about what specifically is causing this stress?"
Saoirse: "It's the sheer volume of tasks. I have back-to-back meetings and deadlines, then go home to more responsibilities. It feels like there's no end in sight."
Dr Terry: "It sounds exhausting. As we discuss this, I'd like to introduce you to a concept that might help. Have you ever heard of the 3 Principles of Mind, Consciousness, and Thought?"
Saoirse: "No, I haven't. What are they?"
Exploring the Principles
Dr Terry: "These principles can provide a fresh perspective on your situation. Let's start with the principle of Thought. Imagine your thoughts are like the ink in a pen. Every experience you have is written with this ink. It's not the paper or the pen that creates the story, but the ink itself. Your feelings are the ink flowing from your thoughts. It's not the workload itself causing your stress but your thoughts about the workload. How does that idea sit with you?"
Saoirse: "I guess I can see that. I feel stressed when I think about how much I have to do. But the tasks themselves don't have feelings."
Dr Terry: "Exactly. Our thoughts shape our experience. Now, let's consider Consciousness. Think of Consciousness as the film projector in a cinema. It brings the script of your thoughts to life on the screen of your Mind. The same reel of film can create a horror story or a comedy, depending on the state of the projector. If you're viewing your tasks through a lens of stress, that's what you'll experience. But this lens can change."
Saoirse: "So, if I change how I think about my tasks, my experience might change too?"
Dr Terry: "Yes. And this brings us to the principle of Mind, which is the source of our innate wisdom and resilience. Imagine the Mind as the vast ocean beneath the surface waves. The waves are the constant thoughts and challenges we face, but deep below, the ocean is calm, vast, and full of potential. When we quiet our minds and connect with this deeper intelligence, we often find creative solutions and a sense of peace, even in challenging situations. Have you ever had a moment where a solution just came to you out of the blue?"
Saoirse: "Yes. Sometimes, when I take a break and stop thinking about work, an idea pops into my head."
Dr Terry: "That's Mind at work. It's always there, ready to help us when we allow it. So, what if you approached your workload with the understanding that you have this inner wisdom to draw upon?"
Saoirse: "I'd probably feel less overwhelmed and more capable of handling things."
Integrating Hypnotherapy
Dr Terry introduces hypnotherapy into their sessions to deepen Saoirse's understanding and help her internalise these principles.
Hypnotherapy Session
Dr Terry: "Saoirse, I want to try a hypnotherapy session today. This will help you access your subconscious mind and reinforce your understanding of the 3 Principles. Are you comfortable with that?"
Saoirse: "Yes, I'm open to it."
Dr Terry: "Great. Please make yourself comfortable. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. As you breathe in, feel a sense of calm entering your body. As you breathe out, let go of any tension or stress."
(Saoirse follows the instructions, and Dr Terry continues to guide her into deep relaxation.)
Dr Terry: "Now, imagine yourself in a serene, peaceful place. It could be a beach, a forest, or any place you feel completely at ease. In this place, you feel safe and relaxed. As you enjoy this peaceful setting, let's bring awareness to the principle of Thought. Remember that your feelings stem from your thoughts. Notice how your thoughts are calm in this peaceful place, and your feelings follow suit."
(Saoirse visualises herself in her serene place, feeling the calmness.)

Dr Terry: "Next, let's focus on Consciousness. Imagine a gentle light representing your awareness. This light can shine on any thought and bring it to life. As you shine this light on positive, empowering thoughts, notice how your experience becomes more positive and empowering."
Saoirse: "I can see that light. It feels warm and uplifting."
Dr Terry: "Excellent. Now, let's connect with the principle of Mind. Imagine a vast, clear sky representing your innate wisdom and resilience. Even if clouds appear, representing challenges or stress, know that the sky is always there, clear and infinite, holding the potential for new ideas and solutions."
Saoirse: "The sky feels limitless and comforting."
Dr Terry: "Whenever you feel overwhelmed, remember this sky and the light within you. Trust that you have the inner wisdom to navigate any challenge."
(After a few more moments of visualisation, Dr Terry gently brings Saoirse out of the hypnotherapy session.)
Dr Terry: "Welcome back, Saoirse. How do you feel?"
Saoirse: "I feel incredibly relaxed and more connected to these principles. The visualisation was compelling."
Shifting Perspectives
Over the subsequent few sessions, Dr Terry continues to help Saoirse explore these principles in greater depth, integrating hypnotherapy to reinforce her understanding. They work on practical strategies to quiet her Mind and access her inner wisdom, such as mindfulness exercises and reflective practices. They also discuss how to reframe her thoughts about her workload and responsibilities.
Midway Through the Coaching Programme
Dr Terry: "Saoirse, it's been a few weeks since we started exploring the 3 Principles and incorporating hypnotherapy. How have things been for you?"
Saoirse: "It's been transformative. The hypnotherapy sessions have helped me internalise these principles. I've been practising mindfulness and noticed that I feel less stressed when I'm more present. I'm also trying to catch myself when I start to spiral into dark thoughts about my workload."
Dr Terry: "That's wonderful to hear. Can you share an example of a time when you successfully applied these principles?"
Saoirse: "Sure. Last week, I had a huge project deadline. Normally, I'd panic, but I reminded myself that the stress came from my thoughts about the deadline, not the deadline itself. I took a few minutes to centre myself using the visualisation techniques from hypnotherapy and then tackled the tasks individually. I finished on time without the usual anxiety."
Dr Terry: "That's a fantastic example of using Thought and Consciousness to change your experience. How does it feel to know that you have this power?"
Saoirse: "It feels liberating. I'm seeing that I can handle my responsibilities without getting overwhelmed."
Sustaining the Transformation
As Saoirse continues her coaching journey, she becomes more adept at applying the 3 Principles. She learns to trust her inner wisdom (Mind) and becomes more aware of how her thoughts (Thought) shape her experiences (Consciousness). She also develops practical strategies to maintain this new perspective, such as setting boundaries at work, prioritising self-care, and regularly reflecting on her thoughts and feelings.
Final Session
Dr Terry: "Saoirse, we've come to the end of our coaching programme. Reflecting on your journey, what stands out to you the most?"
Saoirse: "I think the biggest change is how I view my challenges. Understanding that my experience is created from the inside out has been a game-changer. I feel more in control and less at the mercy of external pressures."
Dr Terry: "That's a powerful realisation. How do you continue applying these principles in your life moving forward?"
Saoirse: "I will keep practising mindfulness and stay aware of my thoughts. I'll also remind myself to tap into my inner wisdom when things get tough. And, of course, I'll remember that my perception is just that—a perception, not an unchangeable reality."
Dr Terry: "It sounds like you have a solid plan. I'm confident that you'll continue to thrive with this understanding. Remember, these principles are always there to guide you."
Conclusion
