20th Century Skills vs. 21st Century ERG Skills

Greetings Friends,

In today’s rapidly shifting workplace landscape, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and Business Resource Groups (BRGs) are under more significant pressure than ever to prove their value. Due to economic uncertainty, changing workforce dynamics, and increased scrutiny of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, ERG/BRG leaders must adapt, innovate, and demonstrate measurable impact.

The most highly valued ERGs and BRGs today are those that have evolved far beyond social networking groups to become strategic business drivers. These groups help cut costs, increase revenue, fuel innovation, strengthen internal culture, and forge deeper customer connections. However, for an ERG/BRG leader to produce the kind of business impact that secures executive support and recognition of the value of their community today is more challenging than ever due to:

  • Tighter Budgets & ROI Demands: With economic pressures forcing companies to cut costs, ERG/BRG leaders must demonstrate tangible business value to secure the more significant dollars they need to accomplish greater impact or simply justify continued investment.
  • DEI Backlash & Political Scrutiny: Growing resistance to DEI efforts means ERG/BRG leaders must drive these measurable results while ensuring they steer clear of putting their companies in the middle of any political firestorms.
  • Hybrid & Remote Workforce Engagement: Attracting and keeping dispersed members of their communities connected and engaged requires innovative, tech-driven community-building strategies.

Today's ERG/BRG leaders must develop new skills to sustain and grow their ability to meet these challenges and have an impact amid all this turmoil. While Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs) recognize this need, even the most supportive are stretched thin, managing increasing demands and pressures with limited resources. With DEI efforts, which were already historically underfunded and understaffed, facing so much increased activity due to all the scrutiny, CDOs have little capacity to fund the comprehensive training ERG/BRG leaders need or give them the attention they require to navigate these new challenges and secure their groups' long-term success.

This inability to provide needed support limits ERG/BRG leaders’ ability to drive measurable business outcomes and makes it harder for CDOs to demonstrate the strategic impact of DEI initiatives. In turn, CDOs will struggle to show results without well-equipped ERG/BRG leaders aligned with them in contributing to key business goals. It’s a tough bind—ERG/BRG leaders need new skills to drive and prove value, but CDOs lack the resources to provide that development, creating a cycle that threatens the long-term success of both.

That’s where ERG PowerTalk can become a lifesaver. In its highly anticipated Season 7, this free, high-value leadership development series—worth nearly half a million dollars—equips ERG/BRG leaders with the insights and strategies to drive business impact and serve their communities effectively. Since its launch, ERG PowerTalk has become a trusted platform for ERG/BRG leaders seeking actionable strategies to strengthen their business case, foster inclusive cultures, and deliver measurable impact. They gain experience in cross-functional collaboration, innovation, and influence—essential competencies for leadership roles across any business function. As a result, ERG/BRG leaders who master these skills elevate their groups and position themselves as high-value talent, ready to step into broader leadership roles within their organizations. ERG/BRG leaders listening to ERG PowerTalk aren’t just investing time in becoming better community leaders; they are taking a Master in 21st-Century Business Course free of charge, positioning themselves for bigger future career opportunities.

Here are some of the key topics the podcast will cover in Season 7:

  • The Evolving Role of HR: How corporate HR has moved from employee advocacy to business partnership, what that means for ERGs and BRGs, and how ERG/BRG leaders can remain influential in this unfolding workplace reality.
  • Demonstrating and Business Impact: Proven strategies for leveraging data to showcase ERG/BRG contributions in tangible business terms. How to mix numbers and stories to influence executives.
  • Tech-Powered Storytelling That Supports a Powerful Brand: Using digital tools to expand outreach, engage remote audiences of community members, job candidates, clients, and prospects, and how to make an impact by showing instead of telling.
  • Innovation and Growth Strategies: How you and your communities can become engines of new and powerful innovations that benefit your company and community.

I see this quite a lot in the UK - ERGs that are really more communities of interest, (or adjacent to identity) e.g. sustainability, charitable efforts, ex-pats or colleagues that have moved to a new Region/City. I think the question of what the evolution is for ERGs is a good one to have. For me, I eventually see them being forums that address belonging etc but that are just not split by identity at all - one big melting pot.
