Summer and Job Search
Happy 4th of July......Today really marks halfway through 2014 and from now to Labor Day is a key time to be networking towards your next job, despite vacations, and days off during the summer, this is the time frame when companies who are gearing up for fall business are hiring.
Every summer since I have been leading Neighbors-helping-Neighbors USA,
( www.nhnusa.org)
I try to remind everyone that the distractions to your job search can be very untimely to not keeping up the efforts during the summer. While it is more difficult to keep focused, and family and other outdoor activities seem to pull us away from our job search campaigns, summer is a very important time be be as active than any other.
While it is good to take some breaks and to recharge your energy, re-evaluate your approach, and determine what you need to improve to stand out from the others, losing momentum during summer months is harmful. many businesses and industries gear up for new business in the fall, seasonal business use the summer to find their new hires, and those who move jobs tend to do so in the summer months for a host of reasons.
If you can afford it and must vacation make sure you bring all your job search tools and information with you.
1- Network the vacation spot, Networking is the most effective way to find a job, use your time on vacation to network with people you might not have regular contact with. Just keep in mind they are on vacation too, so leave the door open for future followup.
(and try not to block their sun when they are tanning)
2- Avoid the family " Career Coaches Advice" in most cases last time they looked for work was very different than today and their advice could be harmful and damaging to your job search campaign efforts.
(family usually means well but they just want you to get back to work)
3- Have all your tools with you laptop, cell phone, check your voice mail and LinkedIn at least once day on vacation, I once had to come back from vacation to go on an interview which I would have missed had I not stayed connected.
(those who are hiring most likely are not on vacation same week you are)
4- Keep up with your group and networking meetings, they help you stay focused and with many others not working on their job search you just could get luckly and find a job that someone else missed the call or email for because they had not read this post!
(those who fish when fewer are fishing can go home with the fish)
5- Use your time to really examine your approach to your job search, your skills and if any may be needed to be improved, and your targets and goals of your job search marketing plan.
