Six years ago, I became a family caregiver for my parents, who were struggling to age in place. It was a job I didn't apply for, one without a job description or training. All I knew was it included all things legal, financial, medical, and housing. The role rapidly infiltrated all areas of my life and had no boundaries. Gaps in the care infrastructure were often time-sensitive and required travel and PTO to resolve. Emergencies and respite care became the norm, keeping me up at night and robbing me of my ability to focus and continue to be a top performer in the workplace. A situation that could not be resolved through a 12-week unpaid Family Medical Leave request. While this role is a privilege, it brings into our lives an overwhelming financial, social, and emotional toll. It's a time when most of us daydream of taking on more in our careers, free from the demands of parenting, and fulfilling our bucket lists with the time freedom we achieve as we reach our mid-40s. Take the time to read the study highlighted in this original post. It contains invaluable information. As I reemerge from my full-time caregiver journey, I can't help but share the 10 Things I Wish I had known: 🗝 6 in 10 workers serve as family caregivers caring for a loved one with a mental, cognitive, chronic health, or mobility condition 🗝 The average family caregiver is 49 and provides 20+ hours of care 🗝 Women support ~80% of the care gaps 🗝 29% of these women, 45+, eventually depart the workforce to provide care 🗝 Don't underestimate the valuable caregiver advocacy skills have; you don't need to be a medical professional to become a caregiver 🗝 65% of older adults rely on families for care 🗝 Extended family supplements 30% of care costs 🗝 Dementia "memory care" is not covered by Medicare; private pay = $~150K annually the average stay is 3.5 years 🗝 Grief becomes a reality once parent-child roles reverse 🗝🗝If a member of the care team is no longer available have a backup or your plan will fall apart! The reality is it's only a matter of time before this issue touches your world! Rosalynn Carter said it best: "There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers." Remember: Knowledge is power. Stay informed. If you've already been impacted, do your part in advocating for family caregivers. They are the backbone of today's eldercare system!
They care for us, and now it's time to care for them. With demand for care and support growing, the need for direct care workers outpacing the growth and stability of this workforce, and increasing pressure on family caregivers, the reality has never been clearer. We are all together in care, bound by shared responsibility and collective need. Direct care workers and family caregivers are essential partners in providing care and support for millions of older adults and people with disabilities. They hold the key to bringing an effective system of person and family-centered care and support to reality. Share this post to help us spread the word about the vital role of all caregivers. Leaders and care provider services, have you taken a moment lately to reflect on what truly motivates you? 🤔 Is that motivation perhaps making a difference in someone's life? Helping others achieve meaningful milestones? Or perhaps it’s your own personal growth that fuels your passion—allowing you to empower those you care for to grow alongside you. As care providers to individuals with learning disabilities or those that are neurodivergent, these values shape the support we give. But in the day-to-day challenges, it’s easy to lose sight of them—especially when systems focus on figures and budgets... While those metrics matter, let’s not forget the heart of what we do: creating opportunities for independence and fulfillment, celebrating achievements (big or small), and fostering growth, both in them and in ourselves. 💛 Pause, reflect, and let your values guide the path forward. 💬 What motivates you most in your caregiving journey? Share below! I'd love to hear them! Together, we can create a service that empowers. #careservices #carehomes #carers #disabilitycare #disabilitysupport #valuesbased

Recent studies estimate that close to 30% of households in the US are caring for a child with additional needs. This article by SHRM explains how employers can support employees with disabled or chronically ill children. Though first published in 2005, the principles and guidance in this article ring just as true today; the needs of children impact all working parents, but for parents of children with additional needs, the intensity of those requirements is significantly heightened. If you want to learn more about how you can support your employees in this situation, please get in touch!
