It’s not about giving up desires or ambitions either. Instead, Karma Yoga is a guide for living fully in the world. Here’s what I learned from Chapter 3 of the Geeta series by Kabir, Shashank Singla, and Nadine.
Karma Yoga encourages us to engage with the world, set goals, and work toward them—yet remain unaffected by the outcome. In a society so driven by results, it’s tough not to be attached to success or fear loss. So, how can we make it easier to focus on action without attachment?
𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁.
Focus on the task at hand with full sincerity, not dwelling on the past or future. This isn’t as simple as it sounds, so it can help to practise activities that ground us in the present moment: walking in nature, sports, dance, yoga, meditation, etc. The more we strengthen this presence, the easier it becomes to carry it into other parts of our lives.
𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
With presence, our intuition grows. Observing our actions from a distance, detached from our ego, helps us understand where they’re coming from. This ability to observe is within us all but often buried under layers of cravings and aversions.
And when we can’t resist our cravings? As Gautam Buddha teaches, we can still be mindful—even as we indulge in the cravings. Observe the experience fully, as awareness keeps the ego in check.
Anjali is a Sanskrit term that means “to offer” or “to salute”. The Anjali mudra is often used to open or close a yoga class. It’s sometimes referred to as Namaste mudra.
This anjali mudra guides us into setting an intention for spiritual awakening during the yoga practice we embark on.
