Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Toyoda Akio announced a project to develop an experimental city where AI (artificial intelligence), autonomous driving technology, robots, etc. can be introduced and tested on the former site of the Higashi Fuji Factory in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture. This "woven city" is classified as a "connected city" that Toyota has been planning to realize. Toyota's connected city is a place where cutting-edge companies and researchers from all over the world can gather to conduct demonstration experiments on CASE (a portmanteau of connected, autonomous, shared, and electric), AI, personal mobility, robots, etc. It's a very ambitious idea and I hope it will come to fruition.

Toyota Motor Corporation unveiled Woven City at CES 2020 as a groundbreaking initiative to transform the former Toyota Motor East Japan plant near Mount Fuji into a hub for innovation. At CES 2025, Chairman Akio Toyoda announced that the first residents—primarily Toyota employees and their families—will begin moving in this year, marking the start of an ambitious new chapter. Phase 1, completed in October 2024, established housing for 360 residents, with plans to expand to 2,000. Starting in fall 2025, Woven City will operate as a "living laboratory" to test and develop cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, self-driving vehicles, and smart homes. The city fosters cross-industry collaboration, partnering with leaders in climate control, food production, education, and even rocket technology, such as Daikin Industries, Ltd. and Interstellar Technologies Inc. Additionally, it will play a pivotal role in advancing autonomous driving and reshaping urban living.
