The other day, I attended a webinar on Domestic Violence, and I was devastated to learn that one woman is murdered by a close family member every 10 minutes. This heartbreaking reality underscores the urgency of raising awareness and taking action. I stand in solidarity with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign committed to ending all forms of violence against women and girls. Now more than ever, we must unite to create safer communities and amplify the voices of survivors. Together, we can work toward a future free from violence. #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #16DaysOfActivism #GenderEquality #DomesticViolenceAwareness
As part of the 16 Days of Activism, many gathered at the No More Empty Shoes vigil on Tuesday 26 November in Martin Place, where a pair of shoes was placed to represent the 57 women who had been murdered in domestic violence homicides over the past year. The powerful display of the shoes, each accompanied by a victim’s name, served as a poignant reminder of this national crisis. As the names were read aloud, a rose was placed to honour each individual. Barnardos also laid a teddy bear to remember and honour the children whose lives had been stolen by domestic violence. Speakers included Delia Donovan, CEO of Domestic Violence NSW, as well as Daniel Principe, Youth Advocate & Educator. We also heard from Darryl Gardiner from Rolling with the Punches, who shared his experience with domestic violence. #16Days #16DaysofActivism

*Our ECN Statement on the Death of Seth Nyakio* We are deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic death of Seth Nyakio, a 23-year-old Zeteck University student, in what is a clear case of femicide and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). We join the community in mourning her untimely passing and stand firmly in condemning this heinous act. At Elevate Community Network, we believe no one should lose their life due to gender-based violence. We call upon the authorities to swiftly investigate this case and bring the perpetrator to justice. We must unite to #EndFemicideKe and work towards creating a safer society where women and girls are free from violence and fear. We urge everyone to stay vigilant, speak out, and support efforts to eliminate SGBV in our communities. #JusticeForSethNyakio #EndFemicideKe #StopGBV #ElevateCommunityNetwork #GenderJustice

As we conclude the 16 days of Activism, we cannot stop the fight here. It is still deeply concerning that cases of SGBV, including femicide, continue to rise across the country. Unfortunately, there exist gaps in enforcement of polices addressing SGBV, a backlog of unresolved cases, and lack of awareness among the general public on the available policies addressing SGBV. These barriers and other restrictive social norms hinder the ability of survivors to seek and get justice. At AMREF through the Power to Youth Project, we are committed to addressing these challenges through: · Collaborating with state actors to support the formulation, review and implementation of SGBV policies in various counties to ensure they are comprehensive and responsive to the needs of survivors. · Working together with Court Users Committee to fast track hearing and resolution of pending cases of SGBV. · Organizing community forums to raise awareness about the existing SGBV policies and resources. At PtY, we simplify these policies into lay language to empower communities with knowledge and encourage survivors to seek support. · Empowering youth advocates through continuous capacity building, linking and learning to strengthen their involvement in advocacy and social accountability to enhance the implementation of policies addressing SGBV. · Working with societal actors (religious leaders, chiefs, etc) to amplify, support and promote progressive social norms (Changing social norms), given their influence in the society. Indigenous women are 33 times more likely to be hospitalised and will die six times more often from domestic violence than non-indigenous women in Australia. Culturally appropriate and independent advice is needed to create real change. A steering committee made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women – including female experts and women who have lived experience of family and domestic violence have come together in Canberra to help develop a standalone national plan with the Federal Government to help end family and domestic violence against First Nations women and children. This is great news and progress towards Closing the Gap and targeting a 50 per cent reduction in family violence and abuse against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children by 2031, progressing towards none. Shift: The Project to End Domestic Violence is a primary prevention initiative against domestic and sexual violence, founded by RESOLVE Alberta Steering Committee member Professor Lana Wells. Over a span of three years, Shift collaborated with the Government of Alberta and IMPACT to create a series of recommendations for policy, practice, and systems aimed at preventing domestic and sexual violence. The Winning Against Domestic and Sexual Violence: Alberta’s Primary Prevention Playbook outlines a strategic plan for the Government of Alberta and the IMPACT collective—a network representing over 300 anti-violence organizations—to address the root causes of violence, such as gender inequality, social exclusion, and colonization, while enhancing protective measures for women, equity-deserving groups, and Indigenous Peoples. I have a piece in the guardian today, calling on the intersections of gendered base violence and state based harms that disproportionately impacts Aboriginal families and communities. Aboriginal women and families continue to be subject to the most horrific forms of violence. And when reaching out for support and safety, they risk having their children removed by the state and criminalisation. Justice & accountability must include First Nations justice & accountability. These intersections must be addressed, and today with the national cabinet meeting, there must be strategic outcomes and actions that address this. https://lnkd.in/gJEtcnbr
