Four hundred years ago, the longleaf pine dominated the landscape of the American Southeast. More than 90 million acres of longleaf forest stretched from Virginia to Texas. And to this day, although the forest cover now hovers around only 5 million acres, longleaf pines remain a beloved symbol of the region. In the American Southeast, we’re supporting efforts to restore longleaf pine and other native species at a massive scale. Learn why 👇 https://lnkd.in/g3DxRwR3

🌲 Among redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains you can find a habitat so rare it doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world: the Santa Cruz sandhills. Like the shark teeth and shell 🐚 fossils found in its sand, the sediment found in Santa Cruz sandhills rose up through space and time, from the bottom of the ocean during the Miocene Epoch, about 23.03 to 5.333 million years ago. Of the approximately 6,000 acres of ancient sea floor that gave rise to Santa Cruz sandhills habitat, about 3,000 acres remain. Learn more about the extremely rare sandhills: https://lnkd.in/gdhEKUGT

At the woodland today and so begins a cycle that has been happening since the last Ice Age in Britain. Hazel has always been magical. Our prehistoric ancestors believed hazelnuts gave one wisdom. The catkin is the male flower and if you look closely you will see the female flower. As kids we knew catkins as 'lambs tails'. Hazel is a native to Britain but what defines a native tree? A native tree is a tree that colonised Britain after the retreat of the glaciers of the last Ice Age up until we lost the land bridge to Europe. We lost the land bridge when sea levels rose and Doggerland became submerged (now under the North Sea) - around 6500 BC, 8500 years ago. After this no new species could naturally migrate from mainland Europe. Interestingly, of all the the trees we see around us in Britain, only 32 are native. Of those, 29 are broadleaves, hazel being one of them.

Winter in the desert is much different than our friends in the East coast and central Midwest. We still get incredibly cold, no doubt about that. With our coldest week about to hit, I was amazed how good the Little Lynn Texas Sage are performing! Most Leucophyllum take a winter break, dropping almost all their leaves, but Little Lynn has remained remarkably evergreen. That’s the beauty of selection and breeding. We can handpick superior plants that look good year round and hold up to temperature extremes. Leucophyllum langmaniae’Little Lynn’ PPAF is not the shortest Texas Sage we have, but its mature size of 4’ x 4’ is an ideal size for residential and commercial landscapes. With the ability to withstand a range of soils types and conditions, it’s a top performer. During the majority of the year, bright lavender flowers smother (and mean SMOTHER) Little Lynn enticing native pollinators.
