Today I had the pleasure of doing the tour of the port of Long Beach. It was truly enlightening to witness the operations firsthand. Here are some fascinating facts I learned during the visit: - Long Beach is the 9th largest port in the world. - The construction of the San Pedro breakwater took 50 years to complete. - At the LBCT terminal, containers can be loaded and unloaded within just 30 minutes. This port prides itself on being the cleanest terminal globally, boasting 90 % to net zero global emissions. - The Cemex (cement) terminal, which closed in 2009 due to the recession, was successfully reopened in 2018. - The SSA terminal in Long Beach is affectionately known as the "Happy Terminal" as it serves routes to Hawaii via Matson. Exploring the Port of Long Beach was an eye-opening experience, shedding light on the immense scale and intricate operations of one of the world's leading ports. Check out the video to see how containers are loaded on the vessel! #PortOfLongBeach #Logistics #freightforwarding #supplychain

People dealing with the end-to-end supply chain movements constantly find themselves needing to have knowledge in fields that are not always in their wheelhouse. Surrounding yourself with well-informed people and companies who can educate and teach you on the intricacies of their specific part of the chain is key. The frustration that we often feel a result of not understanding often goes hand in hand with a whole lot of assumption. How can we teach and prepare our clients when we don’t understand ourselves? Yesterday (before the big storm that hit Perth ⛈) Jenni Tiernan and I had the opportunity to sit down with Sean Jeffries, General Manager Operations and Scott McDowell, Landside Superintendent at DP World in Fremantle. This face-to-face meeting was set up after an issue that our transport company faced a few weeks back with both Scott and Sean providing some transparent feedback on the situation. We talked about the improvements at the terminal along with the problems that arise and how they are managed and solved. Scott was then kind enough to show Jenni and I around the yard which provided further insight to the challenges that are faced daily. Watching the truck movements was captivating and it was a fantastic experience to be right in the middle of a working port. The freight industry in Western Australia has long been perceived as distinct from the rest of the nation. Our approach has predominantly revolved around cultivating strong relationships. As Sean highlighted, in Fremantle, the principle of six degrees of separation prevails and I suggest that we should leverage these connections to not only benefit ourselves, but our clients also. Thank you so much to Sean and Scott for your time. (For reference Jenni and I are about 1.5m tall - this ship to shore crane is around 50m in height. We missed the Pusan C’s arriving alongside by about an hour! 😮)

#MeetMetroPorts and Adam Balderson, our Regional Director of Operations. Raised in Wilmington, NC, Adam grew up in his family’s small business, learning early on to connect with people from all walks of life. His maritime journey began through a high school friend, Metro's Jaimie Wightman, at Southeast Crescent Shipping, where he started as an equipment operator and clerk, handling everything from military vehicles to project cargo. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, Adam quickly built his expertise. When Metro Ports acquired Southeast Crescent and expanded, Adam embraced new responsibilities, traveling to operations in Galveston, San Diego, Vancouver, Boston, and Charleston. He advanced to managing vessel operations, bulk warehousing, and tank farms, ultimately becoming Terminal Manager. Now, as Regional Director of Operations, Adam brings over two decades of hands-on expertise, contributing to the growth and development of Metro Ports across the Carolinas. Let’s hear more from Adam: Q: How has the maritime industry evolved over the years? A: Safety has seen a major transformation. It’s become almost “fashionable” to embrace a forward-leaning safety culture. Metro has been ahead of the curve, and it’s been an essential and positive shift for the industry. Q: What’s most important part of your role today? A: Ensuring that resources, assets, and knowledge are aligned with operational priorities. Keeping the team informed and creating a clear path for their success is crucial. Q: Describe your terminals and the cargo they handle. A: In Morehead City, we handle project cargo like aircraft, wind energy components, and organic grains. Wilmington sees a mix of bagged cement, lumber, fertilizers, steel, and military equipment. We operate the cement and fertilizer terminals as well as the RoRo cargo. Charleston’s main focus right now is bulk material. Q: What’s the most innovative solution you’ve come up with at work? A: It’s hard to pick one. We solve a lot of problems, and most great ideas come from collaboration. Sometimes, an equipment operator has the best perspective, other times, it’s the sales team. I believe in listening to everyone and giving credit where it’s due. Q: What might people be surprised to know about you? A: I’ve been surfing since I was seven and took up paddleboarding about 10 years ago, which I enjoy with my wife and daughter. In the colder months, I like fishing from the beach and doing cold plunges. Recently, I picked up pickleball—my wife got me into it, and I was hooked right away. Q: Any advice for new employees at Metro? A: Be curious and ask questions. Your growth depends on your willingness to take on responsibility. Go beyond your job description, show your value consistently. Your success will be noticed, and it is contagious! ⚓
