🌍 The theme of #EarthDay 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics.” In this third post of our #EarthDay 2024 series, let’s look at two projects that are registered in Verra’s Plastic Waste Reduction Program. 🌊 In Senegal, the “Deekali Plastic Recovery West Africa” project (ID 2720 in the Verra Registry) expands regional infrastructure and supports local communities. The project ➡️Develops a local household waste segregation system; ➡️Buys energy-efficient recycling equipment;  ➡️Creates local jobs and provides a better income for collectors; ➡️ Scales collection and recycling capacities; and ➡️Increases the supply of recycled plastic chips and granules for regional manufacturing. 🌐 Learn more here: https://bit.ly/4cVs2Xk Meanwhile, the “Second Life Thailand” project (ID 2513 in the Verra Registry), operating since 2020, increases plastic waste collection and recycling in remote coastal and island communities. 🌍 Innovating Plastic Recycling: Nzambi Matee's Solution Nzambi Matee, the founder of Gjenge_Makers in Kenya, is making strides in tackling plastic waste. Using her background in material science and engineering, she converts discarded plastics into durable building materials. Gjenge Makers recycles between 10 and 25 metric tones of plastic waste weekly, mixing it with sand to produce paving bricks. This initiative addresses plastic waste and aids infrastructure development, like building roads that help children get to school on time. Nzambi underscores the significant role of plastic across industries and the need to rethink its lifecycle, especially single-use plastics. Her work demonstrates a practical solution to a global issue, inspiring change and promoting sustainable practices. DO YOU KNOW WHAT WASTE CODE WE RECYCLE? 🤔 There are various type of waste that other Plastic waste organisations recycle and they have different codes to identify them, but at our factory, what we recycle is the PET plastic packaging used for water, beverages, or soft drinks and the correct waste code (EWC) is, 15.01.02 – Plastic packaging, this waste code specifically covers all types of plastic packaging, including PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles commonly used for beverages like water and soft drinks. At Mulatya Africa Advisory Services Limited (MAAS), we understand the urgency of tackling plastic pollution. This Earth Day, we're joining the global movement with the theme "Planet vs. Plastics." ♻️ EARTHDAY.ORG is calling for a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040. While construction can be a major contributor to plastic waste, there's good news! Here are ways the industry is tackling plastic pollution: 1. Developing innovative materials: Recycled plastic aggregates in roads, bioplastics for insulation, and wood composites for flooring are reducing our reliance on virgin plastics. 2.Minimizing single-use plastics: Reusable packaging, on-site water filtration systems, and proper waste management are cutting down plastic waste generation on our projects. 3. While the efforts to recycle as much as possible, this article, looking at how much of the world's plastic is actually recycled is a good reminder that it's most important that we focus on reducing and reusing plastics.
