Public electric vehicle charging stations are becoming more common as EV adoption increases here in Indonesia. However, if people do not follow EV charging etiquette, these facilities may become chaotic and inefficient. For example, occupying a charging position when not charging can cause a waste of charging resources. Therefore, maintaining proper EV charging station etiquette is now important for both enhancing personal charging experiences and protecting these shared resources. With multiple drivers often needing to power up at the same locations, small etiquette can go a long way toward reducing congestion and friction. ThunderPlus, an Indian EV charging company, has partnered with Oyika, a Singapore-based battery swapping company, to expand its EV charging solutions in Southeast Asia. The partnership involves integrating Thunder Plus's EV charging products, including fast chargers for two-wheelers and three-wheelers, into Oyika's battery swapping stations across the region. This strategic move is expected to enhance the EV infrastructure in countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Singapore, and support the goal of accelerating EV adoption in Southeast Asia. Rajeev YSR, CEO of Thunder Plus, emphasized the company's commitment to delivering advanced charging solutions globally and promoting sustainable transportation. "Yeo suggested classifying charging stations as national grid assets, allowing Tenaga Nasional Bhd to finance their construction through capital expenditure, supported by incentive-based regulations in the next regulatory period." -- This was proposed around 2020, but the main pushback was that by including EV charging infrastructure under the regulated asset base, this will "socialise" the cost meaning that all TNB customers will have to pay in varying degrees. However there's a good chance that low-consumption customers are already being subsidised by high-consumption customers via cross-subsidies and therefore won't be affected. Will need the cross-subsidy data, including the actual generation and distribution cost breakdown to confirm this. What do you think? Aishah Daniyal: “The slow progress in expanding EV charging stations is due to the high installation and operational costs, especially in rural areas, and this has hampered a higher growth in its adoption. “In rural areas, charging stations often have low usage, making them financially unviable. To break even, at least two EVs would need to use a station daily but many of them have few to no users.” — This is why rural areas need direct government assistance in the form of matching grants to help extend charging infrastructure to less-than-profitable areas.
