At the end of a workweek when I started my first projects with 2 new clients (yay!), and also started to regenerate after a pretty hard period, I spent my Friday lunch break on our terrace re-reading an old favourite. Let me share Christopher Moore's thoughts on corporate life back in 1995: "They [office workers of San Fransisco with monotonous, mind-numbing jobs, and a good salary to buy high-end outfits] have to look right or their peers will turn on them like starving dogs. They are the fallen gods. The new gods are producers, creators, doers. The new gods are the chinless techno-children who would rather eat white sugar and watch science-fiction films than worry about what shoes they wear. And these poor souls desperately push papers around hoping that a mystical message will appear to save them from the new, awkward, brilliant gods and their silicon-chip reality. Some of them will survive, of course, but most will fall. Uncreative thinking is done better by machines. Poor souls, you can almost hear them sweating." “Are you still happy working here?”. It's a fine question to ask when you’re 50/50 about a potential employer. It's one I was once asked & it genuinely made me stop & think. It also significantly heightened my respect for the person on the other side of the desk. It's the one very simple question that cuts through the polished company spiel and gets to the heart of things. Add a little bit of weight to the 'still' bit of the question, too. It will nudge the interviewer to reflect on their own journey, and if there is some serious hesitation or involuntary bodily movements, it may be telling you something. Conversely, if they light up, share genuine stories that make you feel like you’d fit right in, there's a good chance, it's a safe place. Unless, they have pathological liar stuck on their office mug. Also, do look out for a genuine response as it can tell you if they’re being real or just selling the dream. Your own instincts can also push you in the right direction & don't fight them, as they're normally right. So, next time you’re on the fence, use your noddle & drop in the little 'still' word. You might just get the clarity you need to make the right call.  

I've heard from several clients (and potential clients) they have recently seen an uptick in disrespectful behavior at work. Some believe it's post-covid related while others feel the election year adds additional stress which results in people saying things they should keep to themselves. I made this video a few years ago to remind people of just how important it is to know our WORDS MATTER.
