Few build hypervisors. We’re one of them. Virtualization is everywhere — but real expertise in hypervisors? That’s rare. Many companies build great products on top of existing platforms. And that’s totally fine — as long as you understand the tradeoffs. Using something doesn’t mean you control it. And hoping upstream decisions will always align with your needs… well, hope isn’t a strategy. At Vates, we chose the harder path: mastering the stack, not just using it. Fantastic post and great to see Xen continue its rightful place in the market as a foundational piece of the tech stack. It's interesting as the more people try to abstract their infrastructure the more the details matter.
This - "It’s not sexy. But it’s critical.", very few companies focus on hypervisors or even deeply into virtualisation, I see it in things like certificate authorities, pxe software, microvms etc too. There is also the danger they get acquired and then the parent company just kills off the product ie: Rip packet.
