Streets and Drainage Superintendent Stephen Wilson continues to make big strides in improving infrastructure in Pilot Point. On his team's way to pouring 324 tons of asphalt in town, they identified intersections to completely replace over the summer. New Infrastructure Inspector Alex Romero has taken the lead on coordinating with the infrastructure in the new sub-divisions as well. The City has contracted with LJA to do a city-wide drainage study to assist with identifying problem areas of town and rectifying the issues to help with runoff following big rain events. #wearepilotpoint

🚧 The Marathon County Highway Department has a unique, innovative approach to transportation maintenance. Did you know.... 🛣 Each of Wisconsin's 72 counties operates under separate agreements to handle the maintenance and plowing of state highways, a model of local collaboration and responsibility not seen elsewhere. 🚘 In Marathon County, the department oversees 880 lanes miles of state highways and 614 county centerline miles, ensuring roads remain safe and accessible year-round. ❄ When winter's icy grip tightens, our fleet springs into action. Thirty-four plow routes and six graders become our frontline defense against the storms, costing approximately $7,000 per hour, excluding salt expenses. Yet, we've embraced innovation, producing 800,000 gallons of salt brine annually to reduce environmental impact. 🚧 Road maintenance is a year-round endeavor, from mending potholes to washing away winter's salt in spring. Each year, 80,000 tons of asphalt are laid at $55 per ton, costing $18,000 per hour. 🌉 The department also oversees 110 bridges and 240 local bridges, along with maintaining 197 state structures. The department proudly possess the capability to construct its own bridges, exemplified by the recent completion of a $420,000 bridge over Willow Creek. Ultimately, the Marathon County Highway Department ensures connectivity, safe passage, and embodies Wisconsin's unique spirit of transportation service.
