Thoughts... Ever heard of the Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow principle? For those who have worked with me over the years, you would have heard the above repeatedly. Sometimes painfully so, but proven right each time. It has it's roots somewhere in my youth and comes from a combination of not putting stuff off, focussing on the task at hand, and setting realistic goals and targets. The concept is: ✅ Make the time to work on what you have been putting off (yesterday), before looking at what you need to do now (today). ✅ Don't think about the future (tomorrow), with unaddressed matters from the past (yesterday). ✅ Don't start something (today), unless you have given thought to the outcome (tomorrow). A practical example or two... When holding a Manco, Exco, Board meeting: ✳ Yesterday - How have we done with our action minutes? ✳ Today - What do our results look like currently? ✳ Tomorrow - What are our plans for the coming period? Or When engaging in a 1-2-1: ✳ Yesterday - How have things been? ✳ Today - What are you currently focussing on? ✳ Tomorrow - What do we need to work on to be successful? Or When telling someone about yourself (elevator pitch): ✳ Yesterday - I come from, and worked at... ✳ Today - I currently am, and work in... ✳ Tomorrow - I am open to, and want to become a... Back in 2001 when I started my business, my first professional goal was pretty simple—repay the ₹10K I’d borrowed from my dad to start the business, and another ₹1.5L I’d lost in an e-commerce venture the year before. Luckily, I hit the goal in just 6 months. But then what? I became completely laidback. For 5 months, I just drifted, with no clear direction. My dad didn’t say a word, but I could sense the weight of my own inertia. One day, while lazing around and contemplating what to do next, it hit me—achieving a goal isn’t the end. It’s just the beginning. I realized goals are great to get started, but if you don’t build momentum, you stop moving altogether. That’s when I stopped obsessing over “goals” and started working towards milestones—small wins that keep you going, no matter how fast or slow. You may achieve your goals or may fail at it and you will be either happy or sad depending on the output. However, you will always cross your milestones albiet a bit fast or slow, provided you are on the right track. As I sit here, reflecting on my journey with MILIFESTYLE Company, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and awe. Couldn’t agree more with #JeffBezos— smart and better risk capital is irreplaceable when it comes to propelling the startup ecosystem forward. We can have the brightest minds, groundbreaking ideas, and a massive domestic market, but there are things which only capital can do. Just a few days ago, #KumarMangalamBirla mentioned in a conversation with Nikhil Kamath that ₹1 crore isn’t enough to start any meaningful business. Yet, in the Indian ecosystem, many investors demand 5-7% equity for $100k, and some desperate founders agree to these terms. If you know you can’t build without the minimum capital required, it’s better to reassess or close shop than let survivorship bias cloud your business plan. A food for thought to fellow founders based on my experience: If you can go to US, go there and build. If you become successful, you will end up becoming far more successful there than in India. Common arguments to build in India (cost, domestic market, govt.), come with caveats. You can always create a backend office to take cost advantage. Domestic market is delusional (no #SaaS primarily targets domestic while all #D2C ends up with very small niche or selling it to some strategic).
