What defines a human dopaminergic neuron? It may seem obvious, but the lack of standardisation in defining, generating and working with human cells poses a major hurdle for neuroscience research. At #SfN2024, scientific experts from Charles River Laboratories, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, and bit.bio emphasised how standardising not only the cells themselves but also the protocols and workflows could improve research outcomes. Fascinating discovery in my research on brain networks while reading Changing Connectomes by Marcus Kaiser! 🧠 The modular and hierarchical organization of the cerebral cortex has been a key feature in many studies, with clusters of highly connected regions forming intricate connections across multiple scales. What's got me thinking, though, is how can a network be hierarchical without being modular? The idea of modularity requires clusters that are more connected within themselves than with other clusters, but if a network is just hierarchical, what does that look like? This is something I'm digging into further, and I’d love to hear others' thoughts on this paradox! #BrainNetworks #Neuroscience #ComplexSystems #Research #NetworkNeuroscience
