AI-friendship/dating needs less refined avatars, not more. It sounds dystopian, but many people will form parasocial relationships with AI. Loneliness and social anxiety are widespread, and virtual AI avatars will increasingly fill this void. There’s a common assumption that this will take off once highly realistic, life-like virtual avatars are available, featuring 4K live video and real-time generation. However, the most compelling virtual personas often leave something to the imagination. A purely voice-based AI (like the one in Her) can be the trigger for some. Similarly, a realistic photo or video interface using only text-based communication can also create a strong connection. This principle was discovered during the development of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur’s Gate 3. In this fantasy game, players design their own character, who grows alongside them throughout a deeply intertwined storyline. Initially, the developers at Larian Studios planned to have voice actors record all dialogue for the player’s avatar. Playtests revealed that the experience was more immersive without voice acting—relying solely on visuals and subtitles. Players imagined their character’s voice and emotional expressions, creating a stronger personal connection. I believe the most successful AI relationships will emerge when avatars intentionally lack seemingly essential components. Imagination becomes the hook, to develop the most meaningful connection.
