We all are more motivated when we have choice. Why wouldn’t we expect the same from students? Choice in attendance. Choice in assessment methods. Choice in course selection. I am a fan of finding ways to provide more choice and autonomy. Re: rigor: I agree that higher education should be challenging and uphold standards, but believe we need to reimagine some of these and ensure they are not an unintentional or intentional gate-keeping tactic.

Education has been, for the last 10 years, one of my biggest passions but also one of my biggest concerns 🤕 No one needs to be persuaded by the importance and impact of Education. However, as someone who works between education and the workplace, I'm very concerned. Education is facing 5 major problems currently: 1. A complete absence for talent attraction and retention 🔸 Teaching is vital, but its importance is completely mismatched by the working conditions offered. There is no strategy to captivate the best and most suited professionals for teaching. 2. Poor working conditions and an uncertain career path 🔸 Teachers are poorly paid, have a low social recognition of their value, fragile professional growth perspectives, and a worrying-high workload in many cases. 3. Teaching styles based on passive learning and memorization 🔸 The teacher still does most of the talk and work in the classroom; students are still expected to sit quietly for blocks of +1h, and assessment is still solely based on a number you collect through a piece of paper called tests/exams where students write about things they won't remember a week after. 4. Low relevance and shelf-life of contents taught 🔸 To what extent and for how long will the content students learn to remain relevant and applicable to their lives? 5. The world is changing fast, Education is changing slow 🔸 There is a growing gap between what the future of the workplace currently requires and how students are prepared through most channels of formal Education. If Education would value SKILLS over grades If Education would value PRACTICAL APPLICABILITY over memorization If Education would value TEAM PROJECTS over listening quietly If Education would value EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE over content absorption How fast and how far would our society improve? How different and enriched could students' lives become? How do you see Education currently? 🤔

"Think back to your own time as an undergraduate—chances are you can easily recall both your best and worst instructors. Students often express frustration, wondering why certain faculty members remain in the classroom despite consistently poor teaching performance. This speaks to the broader issue: while we can recognize bad instruction, higher education lacks a consistent mechanism for addressing it. However, it’s crucial to note that effective teaching is not synonymous with an easier, less rigorous experience. In fact, the most impactful instructors are often those who set high academic standards while still fostering an engaging, supportive learning environment. Their success lies not in lowering the bar but in helping students rise to meet it. Professional development in teaching should be a required component of faculty training, and performance should be regularly evaluated through both formative and summative assessments. Tying salary increases to measurable improvement and teaching effectiveness is a crucial step toward ensuring accountability and fostering growth in instructional quality." ~An esteemed management professor told me years ago that financial awards are short-term sugar highs that often do not have lasting performance effects. Never mind the fact that financial awards in this instance are paying faculty extra for what they should already be doing.

Yes! This: "But in addition to focusing on the ultimate employment goals of students, we believe in the value of an education—of exposure to ideas across subjects and of learning to grapple with new ideas and different perspectives. This process should encourage students to discover their intrinsic motivations and to develop a relationship with learning that will serve them well both during their formal education and far beyond that first job."

How is the 21st century affecting post-secondary education?? It's no longer about just learning the vocational content of a program -- today's learners need to master the soft-skills, particularly how to think, ask questions and communicate their ideas. Attached is my Master's project -- Catching up to yesterday: https://lnkd.in/gZVZKN5m
