United Nations OCHA’s Post

2024 was the deadliest year for aid workers on record—360 killed across 20 countries. 95% were local staff—the backbone of every response. They must be protected. And their commitment must be recognized. Too often, their sacrifices go unnoticed. Aid workers are #NotATarget.

Deeply saddened by these numbers. Local aid workers are the unsung heroes who risk everything to serve their communities. Their protection must be a priority, and their dedication deserves global recognition. #NotATarget

Dear UNOCHA, you forgot to say from what locality most local aid workers came from... Of course every aid worker matters. Of course, no crisis is less important. But when there is such an imbalance... well,,, decency would require mentioning the G place.

I think this statistics is only partially true. They receive much less coverage because the biggest chunk of these killed workers were murdered by Israel. As we know Israel lobbies the world to cover their crimes against humanity. And this is a fantastic example on how well they succeed in this horrifying strategy. If the killed ones are Palestinian then they are terrorists. This horrid narrative is so powerful that media coverage is barely existing.

My name is Hassan Adam, a refugee from Darfur currently residing in Libya. I am writing to express my sincere and strong desire to volunteer with your respected organization in any available humanitarian field. Although I do not hold academic qualifications or official certificates, I have a deep commitment and willingness to serve others and contribute to improving the lives of those in need. I have gone through difficult experiences as a refugee, and I feel a strong humanitarian duty to give back, even through the simplest form of help. I am fully ready to work in any humanitarian field — whether fieldwork, awareness activities, or logistics — and I am open and eager to learn or receive training whenever required. I truly believe that anyone can make a difference if given the opportunity, and I hope this message will be the first step towards a meaningful journey of serving the community through humanitarian work. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Hassan Adam Phone: +218926766837 Email: hassanadam09909@gmail.com

Protecting and supporting #humanitarian #workers is essential, with particular attention to local staff, who are often the most exposed to risks and the least protected. Protect Humanitarians is an independent NGO advocating for better #protection and #support for humanitarian personnel, with a particular focus on local staff. Through a dedicated emergency fund, we provide concrete support to NGOs and their staff, survivors of attacks, and victims’ relatives. We conduct #research and promote best practices in #StaffCare, #MentalHealth, and #LegalAssistance to support #survivors after incidents. #NotATarget
