The Toy Fair in London has come and gone and many have packed their bags only to be straight off to Nuremburg. So let's take a look at my highlights form a show I haven't visited for 10 years, whilst building my FMCG portfolio experience. For me, looking at the show in a new light was invigorating, exciting and a little frustrating. Applying what I've learned whilst away I can see many opportunities for toy companies that traditionally may not have been considered, but in todays fiercely competitive landscape, may require a second look. First the Invigorating. I found the show to be alive. this wasn't the case for my last visit where I felt things had becoma a little stale. I appreciate covid has come in between and so maybe the recovery has added a bit of postive energy, but I found a sector alive with possibilities if people take a step to look in the right direction. It was genuinely great to come back. The exciting New brands I hadn't seen before or products that had been there but are now being appreciated. Some great innovation whether with product, pack or general business practice. I enjoyed seeing people with purpose, knowing their mission and how their marketing fits into the overall business plan. That is an exciting development. The frustrating I can't help but feel not everyone has moved forward. I appreciate the pressure that comes from the current retail landscape and of what is 'expected'. But isn't that an opportunity in itself? A chance to do the unexpected? Instead of accepting the status quo, now is definitely the time to look outside of the bubble. Becuase out there is a land of opportunity if we are prepared to do the extraordinary. It will require investing elsewhere and getting brands fit for a different type of purpose but those that grasp this nettle will reap due reward IMO. Think AI, digital purposing, creator economies and social shopping. As someone you all know said to me: "the Toyconomy is reshaping itself!" All in all I leave London with a sense of delight that I was there that I re-met friends I had neglected for too long and that there is still a thriving industry that just needs to be it's old confident self! Special thanks to everyone I met and especially to Thierry Bourret for being so hospitable!
