Introducing Behind the Design.
This week, we’re taking you inside the creation of the Wavy Jewelry Organizer with Umbra’s VP of Design, Matt Carr.
More than just storage, Wavy is a reflection of our design DNA—its sculptural curves echo some of our most iconic pieces, like the Garbino Can and Postino Mailbox. A balance of form and function, designed to feel effortless.

Hi everybody, My name is Matt, I'm head of design here at Umbra. Welcome to Behind the Design. Today we're starting with WAVY Jewelry Organizer, one of our newest designs at amber.com. Today we're joining you from our headquarters here in Toronto. ON is where everything comes to life. From first sketch to design to the marketing, a lot of stuff goes on here in Toronto. Tell us what inspired the design of WAVY Jewelry Organizer? Always the the inspiration question, right? Well, we really wanted to do a functional stacking. Tray So when thinking about the inspiration, we are thinking about how forms and angles can actually nest together. But with this, we wanted to add a little bit more of an attitude, kind of speak to a jewelry itself in a way. That's why we chose the material Chrome. So I would say those are like the big parts of the inspiration is actually came from the function that was required. How did you come up with the WAVY shape? And in the amber DNA, we have a lot of this this wave, this undeleting form factor. It's almost like part of some of our DNA. Rooting back to Garbino, can has has a wave to it. That Postino mailbox, which is one of the first items that I did here at Umbra. It's based on geometry, but has a really organic feel. Did you face any challenges while you were bringing this idea to life? I don't think there's one idea that we've done in the catalog I don't brought that hasn't faced some sort of challenge or obstacle or call it an opportunity. But with this, I think the biggest thing was like to how to do the functionality that needed to hold the right amount of rings for what we thought. These are typical user and then still have like a great weight to it. So designing in the right material, which is a diecast sync with a Chrome plating and ensuring that it nests properly. This actually nests perfectly here. So that's actually was quite difficult to to come up with the CAD four. And of course we want to do things that are at a great price. Taking all that into consideration, we're always mindful of what price is really demonstrates great value to our consumer and that's kind of like the major factors that went into this design. Well, it's functional. I think it's quite memorable. I guess it has a bit of a personality as well. You know, we really wanna tell more about the stories of our designers and the products that we create. You know, there's a whole team that works here in Toronto. We work with external designers that are all over the world because we we do sell to the world and we have a great customer like yourselves that could find this item on amber.com. Thank you.
