**I'm running the London Marathon for Age UK in April and would really appreciate donations for this brilliant charity!** https://lnkd.in/erpD48wi I got into running a few years ago and have gradually improved my running ability from occasionally running 5K to running my first Half Marathon at the Cardiff Half in October. I've never run further than this so the full Marathon will be a challenge! I've chosen to run for Age UK having seen the work that they do when I attended the Age UK centre in Hounslow a couple of months ago, through my employer (Sky). They run a 'Vintage Club' for people suffering with dementia - the club enables the attendees to socialise with each other and the centre staff and also to engage in activities such as arts and crafts, walking football and bingo. It was brilliant to talk to the attendees and to see them enjoying themselves. Clubs such as these wouldn't be possible without external funding and donations in order to pay for the staff and centre running costs. I look forward to volunteering with them again soon. In addition to these clubs at the Age UK centres around the country, they also provide a number of services for older people such as a telephone friendship service to tackle loneliness, computer clubs, financial advice, lunch clubs and legal support. £20 could help pay towards training a volunteer to make life changing regular friendship calls; £140 could help pay for a Benefits Entitlement Check that, on average, identifies £2,000 in additional income per year for an older person; and £350 could help pay towards a whole year of telephone friendship calls to a lonely older person when they have no one else to turn to. Older people are more in need of support given difficult economic times in recent years. Between 2021 and 2023, homelessness for people aged 75 increased by 18.2%. Almost 1 million older people say they often feel lonely and lonely older people are about 25% more likely to develop dementia. Thank you very much in advance for your support!

The Sport Industry Research Centre paper (SIRC), which was due to be presented to All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf today, found that in 2019 £5.1bn was spent on golf, the equivalent of £964 per adult player. The growth of the sport since 2014 is reflected in a real terms spending increase of 8% after accounting for inflation. The highest areas were members’ fees (£1.4bn), golf equipment and clothing (£1bn), green fees (£526m) and accommodation (£484m). Overall, golf was responsible for 10% of the £51bn spent by consumers on sport in the UK. Sports Minister Stuart Andrew MP said: “Golf makes a fantastic contribution to the economy, supporting thousands of jobs across the country and having proven wider societal benefits too.""

Threshold Sports is on a mission to inspire and empower the next generation to embrace trail running and experience the benefits of time spent outdoors in nature. As part of this, we commissioned a survey of over 1,000 active young people across the UK, to better understand the habits, motivations, and barriers they experience when it comes to taking part in physical activity. And the results are in: 🌳 73% of the 16-25-year-olds told us they prefer exercising outdoors in nature over working out in a gym. 🏃♀️ 81% are interested in taking part in a trail running event. 🌄 Almost half (47%) of 16-25-year-olds feel calmer after exercising outdoors in nature, but just shy of a quarter (23%) of young people from diverse communities say they don’t have easy access to places to exercise outdoors. It’s clear from these insights that the interest is there, but work needs to be done to open up trail running to make it more accessible to young people, particularly those from diverse communities. That’s why we’re working with TrailFam, a charity dedicated to improving young people’s lives through trail running, to inspire and empower more young people to take on our flagship 24-hour trail event, Endure24. Interested to discover more? Head over to the website to check out our survey findings: https://lnkd.in/e9n2X2JK #UltrasForAll / #MoreIsInYou

DAY 17 Recap. Another testing day. The good side first as I was moving better with my body. There were no niggles. I felt like I was moving a little bit better, a little bit lighter. However, the stomach issues really put me to the test today. I think mentally, around the 60K mark, I felt like I was done. But it was just another day that I had to really grind out. It’s hard when your body is literally eating itself every single day because you’re trying to replace big calories lost from the previous day, big energy, I should say, so an estimated 10,000 active calories are burned every single day. When you’re feeling nauseous and can’t get food back in, it makes it really challenging. How do you have the energy to run a double marathon when you can’t get food back in? So that was today’s challenge, but thankfully again, I grinded it out. Thanks to the support of my team, who adapted rather than seeing me every 7 km mark, saw me every 5 km. We also had a couple more extra commitments today, which made it obviously very rewarding. It’s what we’re doing it for, in helping make wishes come true with a radio interview on SCN Sydney and 7 news here on the mid. Coast. I felt really grateful that we were able to do that. But obviously it does add a challenge when I’ve also got to do those stops and commitments and bank a double marathon. So another big day. Thanks for your support. I hope you’re enjoying following this journey here. Help us reach the target of 25k donations to @makeawishaust by this Sunday by donating on my link in bio. Distance: 84.8km’s Start: Coolongolook, NSW Finish: Kew, NSW -31.6203920, 152.7267648 Sponsored by: Run the World, Fortem Media, Verde Nutrition Co, Apollo Motorhome Holidays, Kennedy Trailers, Coles Group, Swysh, Dr. Dough, LSKD, Pickawall, Workinc, Solid Foundation Concreting, Health Systems Go #ultrarunner #ultrarunning #runningcommunity

Marathons and Healthcare: More Alike Than You Think As I prepare for the New York City Marathon with Team NYP NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital I’ve noticed how running a marathon and working in healthcare have much in common. Both demand a blend of endurance, adaptability, and purpose. Here are some parallels I’ve experienced between these two worlds: Endurance and Patience In a marathon, every mile tests your stamina. Similarly, healthcare professionals endure long shifts and emotional challenges. In both, progress can feel slow, but pushing forward—one step, one patient at a time—makes all the difference. Training and Preparation Months of preparation lead up to race day, just like years of education and hands-on experience shape our ability to care for patients. Whether it’s a marathon finish line or a critical healthcare moment, preparation is key. Adaptability Both marathoners and healthcare professionals face the unpredictable. A sudden cramp mid-race or an emergency in the hospital requires quick thinking and the ability to adjust under pressure. Team Support Behind every marathoner is a team, just as in healthcare, no one works alone. It’s the collaboration among doctors, nurses, and support staff that ensures the best outcomes—just like running with a team helps you cross the finish line. Resilience Through Challenges We all hit “the wall,” whether around mile 20 of a marathon or after a particularly tough day in healthcare. Pushing through those moments builds resilience and makes the victory even sweeter. Purpose and Passion Marathoners often run for causes they care about, just as healthcare professionals work to make a difference in patients’ lives. That sense of purpose fuels us to keep going, even when the journey is hard. As I prepare to run the NYC Marathon with Team NYP, I’m reminded that both running and healthcare are about endurance, commitment, and making an impact. If you’d like to support my efforts, you can learn more about my journey here: https://lnkd.in/e2UP6eYy #Marathon #Healthcare #Endurance #Resilience #Teamwork #Purpose #NYCMarathon #TeamNYP #GivingBack #MakingAnImpact #StayAmazing

How to Keep Going During an Endurance Sporting Event Endurance events can be challenging, but they're not as hard as you might think. Here are three tips to help you push through: 1. Think Beyond the Event: Focus on what comes after the finish line, like a charity you're supporting or another event you're working towards. It keeps you grounded and objective about the task at hand. 🏃➡️ 2. Trust Your Body: Don't let your mind sabotage you. Push past the initial energy wall, and you'll find you can keep going. 🏃➡️ 🏃♂️➡️ 3. Ride the Waves of Energy: Energy usage isn't linear. Keep pushing when it gets tough, stay hydrated, and ensure your body has the reserves it needs. 🏃➡️ 🏃♂️➡️ 🕺 Ps. David, we on for Weez Walk 2025 and what is our target time?
