New study shows that for 1.5°C pathways, 90% of the mitigation between 2020 and 2030 will come from emissions reductions: 70% CO2 emission cuts 20% non-CO2 emission cuts 10% land-based CO2 removals (e.g. afforestation). https://lnkd.in/deU_FYh8

There are an array of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions that offer significant potential for addressing the climate crisis. Here at Climate Vault, we like to think about the different possible forms of CDR implementation by breaking them down into three categories: 1 - Terrestrial 2 - Technological 3- Oceanic Advancing CDR projects across all three pathways can make a serious dent in climate change, because we need multiple reliable and quantifiable approaches to remove and store carbon at scale. Learn more about each of the pathways at https://hubs.la/Q02tZZl70 and take a deeper-dive into CDR. #VaultIt #Decarbonization #ClimateAction #CDR

The World Economic Forum highlights the need for sustainable cooling solutions as global demand for air conditioning and refrigeration rises with urbanization and climate change. Traditional cooling systems significantly impact the environment by consuming energy and emitting greenhouse gases, further contributing to global warming. To address the cooling demands sustainably, policymakers and industries must promote efficient technology, enforce building codes, and support a shift toward greener urban infrastructure to mitigate climate impacts and ensure widespread access to cooling for vulnerable populations. Good news Friday 🎉 Fantastic news for environmental progress in the European Union! According to the 2024 Climate Action Progress Report, the EU experienced a remarkable 8.3% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023. This substantial reduction, the most significant in several decades excluding the pandemic year of 2020, showcases the positive impact of the widespread adoption of renewable energy sources throughout the Continent. The commitment to sustainability and the continuous efforts to combat climate change are evidently paying off, marking a significant milestone in the EU's environmental journey. Let's continue to support and promote initiatives that contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for all. https://lnkd.in/eUJNuR3e #EnvironmentalProgress #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction

This is an important post. Whole lifecycle carbon should ALWAYS be considered when looking at your renewable energy strategy. This especially applies to heating and cooling. COMPETING TECHNOLOGIES to GSHP use DAMN STATISTICS and LIES to put the technology in the shadows. It stops NOW. Please check out our post below and read the article we authored looking at whole lifecycle carbon for ground source heat pump systems. You will gain insights that will keep you informed and ensure you have the right conversations with your clients. Don't be hoodwinked again! If you need additional help our team are always available to support your client presale meetings at no charge and provide expert advice. Comparing Whole Life Cycle Carbon Emissions Research from the Climate Change Committee (CCC) reveals that direct greenhouse gas emissions from buildings account for 17% of the UK’s total emissions, primarily from fossil fuels used for heating and hot water. Understanding both embodied carbon (the upfront environmental cost of manufacturing and installing an energy source) and operational carbon (emissions during use) is crucial for decarbonising heat. While ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) have slightly higher embodied carbon than other solutions, their significantly lower operational carbon emissions more than compensate for this over their lifecycle. For instance, a GSHP installation, including boreholes, offsets its embodied carbon difference compared to an air source heat pump (ASHP) in just over a year. Over a 100-year lifespan, GSHPs emit around 34% of the CO2 of gas boilers, whereas ASHPs emit about 48%. Whole life cycle carbon is the true measure of GSHPs’ success, with GSHPs producing less carbon than both traditional gas boilers and ASHPs. As we strive for Net Zero and the decarbonisation of heat, considering the entire lifecycle of carbon emissions is essential. Are you a researcher working on CO2 removal (CDR)? Do you want to help shape global reporting standards on CDR approaches? In a new blog, our Executive Director Dr Steve Smith and Freya Chay of CarbonPlan explain why you should publicly share your data and methods as soon as you can if you want to feed into this process. Read the blog via the link in Steve's post below, or on the CO2RE website: https://lnkd.in/drGCRcGg Thanks to CarbonPlan for giving us permission to republish.

Last week the IPCC held a scoping meeting to develop methods for including CO2 removals into emissions reporting by countries. Freya Chay and I were there, and we're here to tell you why this is important not only for governments, but also for new removal projects and standard setters: https://lnkd.in/dv-HnMYS

#mondayinnovation The emission target before the carbon gap report. 🎬 source: Phys Org Was this type of study not discussed or considered before developing these targets? Paris Agreement. Now we are finding out that countries' current plans will not meet the objectives. From the article. We are now making transparent the specific ambition gap in scaling up removals. The most alarming but not surprising fact. "This planetary waste management will soon place completely new requirements on policymakers and may even become a central pillar of climate protection in the second half of the century." https://buff.ly/3JLVdP1
