The Career Transition Strategies Workshop facilitated by Noël McCall / MilBridge Consulting, LLC, was valuable to me. If you are transitioning, this is a good workshop to attend to help you prepare successfully. Although I have attended workshops and fellowships in the past covering transition topics in fine detail, I believe it is imperative to stay sharp and incorporate lessons learned to continually improve - especially when choosing the right company culture, position within your chosen passions, and path to pick the right job after the military. Here are some key takeaways from the workshop:
*Military to Civilian Transition: Further focusing my resume, pitch, and interview response narrative.
*One-on-One Coaching: Personalized guidance to refine my career path.
*Networking Strategy Improvement: Continuously working on uncovering hidden job opportunities. Networking goes beyond seeking job opportunities, as it allows you to help others as well. This is the area I seek most to improve, as it is a key differentiator for success.
*Personal Branding: Understanding my brand, ensuring I was still on azimuth, and further refining/learning how to communicate it effectively. I was able to compare an assessment with similar ones to better ascertain my skills, strengths, and weaknesses.
*Negotiating Offers: Setting expectations and exploring options.
Huge thanks to Noël McCall and Al Lampkins for hosting this workshop. Thanks also to Veterans Bridge Home and @The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic.

"At S&C, we pride ourselves on being a company that prioritizes veteran workers. In 2024, S&C partnered with the Department of Defense to provide training and job opportunities for U.S. military service members looking to transition to civilian work post-service.
We are so thankful for our veterans who came to S&C after they served and very proud to have partnered with the Department of Defense.

The skills gap is eating the lunch of many manufacturers. However, when I look across hiring practices I often see even bigger gaps.
Does your company actively communicate groups that have skills that are highly applicable to your operations to hiring managers?
Check out this post from Jennifer Boykin, Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII.
I can think of many others industry verticals and the applicable roles across the service branches trained on ensuring safety, quality, and on time service to customers across the globe.
Don’t just talk about the skills gap, actively get out of your box to bridge it!

As we celebrate #VeteransDay, Newport News Shipbuilding is proud to honor all who have served. Our commitment to the veteran community goes far beyond one day. That’s why we’ve partnered with SkillBridge, a United States Department of Defense program designed to help service members who are preparing for military discharge. It allows them to begin navigating civilian work life while receiving on-the-job training.
We welcomed US Navy interns Katie Yarboro and Garrett Halman to NNS this summer through SkillBridge. Former service members are a natural fit for shipbuilding, and we look forward to welcoming even more veterans into our ranks.

🚨Collision industry leaders read this!
When I was recruiting for the Military, each branch—Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Navy—was vying for the same 1% of students. The competition was fierce and relentless.
Instead of viewing other branches as rivals, I took a different approach. I partnered with our biggest competitor, the Marine Corps, to expand that 1% into 5% by collectively enhancing the overall image of the military.
This strategy worked exceptionally well. By combining our efforts, we engaged future soldiers and Marines, and leveraged our social media platforms to host joint events that generated more interest in the military. One notable event was a joint service suicide awareness campaign that involved the entire community. We also conducted joint training sessions with our enlisted members, capturing and sharing the fun on social media. This collaboration widened our recruitment pool, leading to greater success for both branches.
The collision industry can adopt a similar strategy. By collaborating, we can elevate the perception of the industry, making it more appealing and increasing the quality of our talent pool.
Coming together is the key. We can compete on talent later.
