📢 First-gen students! 📢 After attending a program geared toward first-gen students interested in getting their PhD, I thought it may be helpful to pass along some things that are "if you know, you know" things (which, as first-gen students, we usually don't know). 1. PhD programs should pay YOU! Trust me, I fully believed that getting my PhD would break the bank, but a good PhD program is going to pay you. Now, they're not going to pay you extravagantly, but they are going to pay you to survive (which is better than the alternative, paying for school AND paying to survive). 2. PhD programs take a holistic approach when accepting students! It is not 100% about your academics; it's also about who YOU are. Did you work? Do you have real experience doing something? Do you know what it means to be in a PhD program? Are you a good fit with the program? 3. FEE WAIVERS!!! If you're looking at taking the GRE soon, fill out the fee waiver form! If you're planning on applying to graduate school, look for the fee waiver for the application! 4. The application process is LONG. If you're planning on applying this fall, you should get a head start NOW while your plate is a little lighter so that way when deadlines are approaching, you're not cramming things in. Perfect things now while there's time! 5. When looking at who you want to work with at a graduate school, make sure they're a) a [Full] Professor or an Associate Professor, b) still actively doing research, and c) a good fit! You can and SHOULD reach out to faculty you're interested in and get to know them. You never know if they're actually a good fit for you or not until you've met them. You can also ask them to provide a list of the people they're advising to ask them how they feel about that professor. 6. Know what YOU want from a program. Some of my must-haves are that the stipend is livable for the location, that there is graduate research funding available, that there are interdisciplinary opportunities, and that there's funding for graduate students who want to go into their sixth year. And there's so much more, but these are some of the big things. Additionally, here is a website that can break down some things for first-gen political science students, but it may prove to be helpful to other first-gen students: https://lnkd.in/gJwd2pvN Most importantly, ask someone in your department for advice. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. For me, it took a lot (and still takes a lot) for me to ask for help. But when I did... things got so much easier and clearer. I'm also happy to help when and where I can! Now that I know a bit more about graduate school admissions, I'm happy to help!
