This is a ingenious way of displaying some of the certifications out there. Most of the ones listed are those used by companies in the market place. I have read that there are hundreds of third party certificates out there. I cover the use of third party eco labels like these in the green marketing section of my book, Greener Products: the Making & Marketing of Sustainable Brands 3rd edition (CRC Press 2024). The use of 3rd party certifications is a way to insulate a brand from green washing, but as I say in the book - "chose your ecolabels wisely." They are costly and you need them to work for your target customer (e.g. don't chose an animal welfare one if this is not a key concern of your target customer). Nice work David Carlin #sustainability #greenerproducts #greenmarketing #marketing #sustainablebrands
The Periodic Table of Sustainability Certifications 🌍 Did you know there are over 30 different sustainability certifications for businesses today, covering everything from animal welfare and organic standards to climate action and recycling? In a world where consumer demands for transparency is at an all-time high, these certifications are more than just labels—they’re a signal of credibility, trust, and alignment with global sustainability goals. But here's the catch: not all certifications are created equal. ✅ What businesses need to know: 1. Credibility is king. Choose certifications backed by rigorous science and clear standards (think LEED for buildings or Fairtrade for ethical sourcing). 2. Fit matters. Not every certification aligns with your company’s goals. Select ones that reflect your values and resonate with your stakeholders. 3. Avoid greenwashing. Certifications are tools, not substitutes for action. Real change comes from integrating these into a broader sustainability strategy. 💡 Why this matters: The right certification can boost brand trust, differentiate your offerings, and even unlock new market opportunities. But over-reliance on them—or choosing poorly vetted ones—can backfire. Consumers and stakeholders are increasingly savvy about what’s authentic and what’s just marketing. Which certifications have you found most impactful for your business or sector? Let me know in the comments! David Carlin makes some good points, but omits the social certifications that the private sector is likely to become increasingly reliant upon as regulations mandating human rights and environmental due diligence come into force. 🚨Without clear criteria defining what makes a certification scheme effective, investors face challenges in determining whether a portfolio company’s membership in a certification program truly reduces its human rights and environmental impacts. To address this gap, Rights CoLab developed Certifications Red Flags, a tool designed with and for investors to assess the ability of certifications to contribute to quality due diligence. We invite investors to explore the tool – currently in beta – along with the rest of the Investor HREDD Precision Toolset: https://lnkd.in/eGNiYGDK #Sustainability #Certifications #ResponsibleInvesting #SupplyChains #HREDD #ImpactInvesting Waseem Mardini Maria Elena Anker Jessie Duncan Amber Reese Seema Joshi Peter Webster Chavi Nana Nana Sarah Dadush Rebecca DeWinter-Schmitt, PhD Schmitt Melina Fachin Polly Marsh Jana Hoess Paloma Muñoz Quick Rémi Fernandez Nabylah Abo dehman Lara Blecher

This is a nice summary of certifications around environmental sustainability ... but what is also interesting about this post are the various points raised in the comments section .. highlighting the benefits and limitations of certifications, the need to link to ISO standards including the most recently ISO Circular Economy standards.. as well as identifying a number of other certifications not included... one question to also explore is how do these certifications link to the European Commission Eco-design of Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) implemented in the 2024 ...
