The partnership between Boston Dynamics and the Toyota Research Institute (TRI), announced on October 16, 2024, marks a significant advancement in robotics and artificial intelligence. This collaboration aims to develop versatile humanoid robots by integrating TRI's Large Behavior Models (LBMs) with Boston Dynamics' advanced Atlas® | Stretch® | Spot® robot. Robert Playter, CEO of Boston Dynamics, described this as an exciting time for the robotics industry, emphasizing the partnership's potential to address complex challenges and foster innovative solutions. In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, such collaboration is crucial for maximizing outcomes. Gill Pratt Chief Scientist of Toyota and CEO of Toyota Research Institute, highlighted that recent advancements in AI and machine learning are pivotal for enhancing physical intelligence. The integration of TRI's technology with Boston Dynamics' hardware promises to transform human-robot interactions, ultimately improving quality of life. The Atlas® robot is engineered not only for mobility but also for advanced manipulation skills, combining sophisticated hardware with programming interfaces that enable complex full-body behaviors. This initiative will be co-led by Scott Kuindersma Senior Director of Robotics Research at Boston Dynamics, and Russ Tedrake, Vice President of Robotics Research at Toyota Research Institute. Their combined expertise will be essential in effectively leveraging the strengths of both organizations. The project aims to deploy the electric Atlas® robot across various tasks, gathering performance data that will enhance the training of advanced LBM 🤖 models and further improve the robot's capabilities. Addressing fundamental questions about human-robot interaction and safety is critical for the responsible development of these technologies.
