"Let’s Make Europe GREAT Again!"
Right now, I’m in Cluj-Napoca - a place that, for some, is just a small dot on the Eastern European map, but for others, it’s a remarkable landmark. For me, it’s the setting of yet another well-organized event Tranzit-revista afacerii de transport si logistica, and for my daughter, who’s studying here, it’s the city where she’ll grow up, mature, and learn to “fly on her own.”
As I sit here reflecting, I can’t help but ask: what did I learn today? The pessimist would say, “It couldn’t possibly get worse,” while the optimist retorts, “Oh, yes it could!” And that brings us to the real question - where is Europe headed? Are we prepared for whatever’s coming? Do we have the power to make a change? Many would say no, things will only get worse. Others argue that with this attitude, things will indeed stay the same. So, let’s choose optimism… because really, could it get worse? Come on, let’s have a little faith!
Romania stands at a crossroads, Europe is tracing its path, and America has already made its move. But does that old saying still hold: the small log can overturn the big cart? Or have we become too passive, too “in conservation mode,” to steer in a new direction? What does that even mean? Right now, we don’t really know. I’m not drawing any conclusions - just observing. With a positive mindset, I’d like to believe things will start looking up. Some are saying it already, others are hesitant, but let’s face it: deep down, we all want it to be true.
So, I’m optimistic if I say, let’s make Europe GREAT again?
PS:
I greet my colleagues and friends who were present at TransLogistica Poland !

Yesterday I published a heavy piece for The European Engineer newsletter: Switzerland vs Poland for Software Engineers.
Instead of my usual rant, this time I shared the story of a software engineer who relocated
-> to Poland,
-> then to Switzerland,
-> then back to Poland.
All while working for big tech companies and building a phenomenal career.
Together, we go over some of the reasons behind his choices for moving to Zurich:
- Joining a big tech there
- Increasing his compensation
- Growing his savings
As well as the ones that brought him back to Poland:
- More affordable services such as baby sitter or cleaning lady
- More affordable 'luxuries' such as dining out or having a bigger house
- Bigger cities and more dynamic social life and economic environment
We also compare key aspects of life, in both places. Such as:
- Education and schools
- Quality and cost of services and housing
- Easiness to integrate
- Language barriers
- Future outlook
- Networking
- Public services and bureaucracy
- Lifestyle and leisure activities
- Tech offices and tech jobs
In last week's article, I ranked the best countries to be based in as a dev in 2024, and I placed Poland and Switzerland together at the top. With a 9/10 rating.
In this week's article, we dive deeper into how these 2 options - both excellent - compare, and how to choose among the two, in case you're considering both.
It's a good one! Make sure to check it out. Link in comments below.
As I walked down a dimly lit street in Zagreb, each streetlight revealed something new—a quiet alley, a small cafe, the textured shadows of old stone buildings.
Just as these lights guided my path, the software quality assurance and testing phases illuminate the unseen corners of a product.
📷 A quick snap capturing the charm of a cozy evening in Zagreb, Croatia.

From Belpasso in Sicily to Helsinki: When Encounters Can Change Your Life – Part 1 🌍✨
It is with great pride that I share a remarkable experience that our 15 PCTO students recently had: a journey to Helsinki, the beating heart of European innovation, where they met one of the most inspiring figures in the tech world, Gabriele Aimone.
Gabriele's story is a powerful example of resilience and vision. Leaving Italy in his early twenties, he carved his path with extraordinary determination. His first stop was Dublin, where he arrived without knowing a word of English. “I had no knowledge of the language,” he recounted, “but I adapted quickly: I found a job at Hertz's European service center, assisting Italian customers. It was there that I learned the value of adaptability and cross-cultural communication.”
From Dublin, he moved to Barcelona, entering the financial sector and honing his skills further. Each experience prepared him for the next step, culminating in his big leap to Helsinki, where he found his place in the video game industry. In Finland, Gabriele Aimone collaborated with leading companies like Supercell and PlayStation Studios, managing teams of over 200 people. His career is a testament to the power of courage, lifelong learning, and stepping out of one's comfort zone.
During the meeting, Gabriele shared an anecdote that captivated our students. Upon arriving in Helsinki, he pitched himself as an Italian wine taster, despite having little experience in the field. “It was an unusual choice,” he said with a smile, “but it proved that passion and enthusiasm can often outweigh technical expertise.” This episode taught him that every experience, no matter how unrelated, can become an opportunity for growth.
Our students were mesmerized as Gabriele Aimone took them behind the scenes of the video game industry. "I never imagined there was so much complexity behind the games I use every day," commented Emanuele Di Blasi, listening intently to how multidisciplinary teams and projects are managed on a global scale.
However, the most poignant moment came when Gabriele opened up about his experience with burnout. “I was at the peak of my career, but something inside me was falling apart,” he candidly admitted. He shared how the relentless pursuit of goals and professional success had led him to lose touch with himself. With remarkable honesty, he explained how he found the courage to pause, reflect, and realign his life.
This lesson, both deeply personal and universally relevant, left a lasting impression on our students, showing them that true success is not only about skills but also about balance and self-awareness.

Make cross-cultural work easier! 🇩🇰 Book me for a speech or workshop on Danish working culture 🇩🇰 | Keynotes • Books • Podcasts | Cultural trainer | Bridging US and Denmark 🇩🇰🇺🇸
When internationals are brought to Denmark as a group – usually for a big project, like building a factory – they tend to work the way they worked together in their home country.
Patterns like traditional hierarchy (and the need to get the “big boss” to sign off on every decision) persist, even though that’s not the Danish way of doing business.
And expectations from the home country’s work culture can cause friction with their new Danish colleagues.
One group of highly-trained Brazilian engineers brought to Denmark for a project told me that they were producing complete minutes of every meeting in Microsoft Word, and were quite annoyed that their Danish colleagues never seemed to read them.
Social interaction among colleagues from different cultures can also be a flashpoint.
After I spoke to a group of Irish specialists brought in for a big project, one told me afterwards that his Danish colleagues seemed “cold” because on the job they weren’t as chatty and outgoing as the Irish (few cultures are!).
I tried to explain that the Danes are indeed willing to chat - at lunch hour, or at Friday bar, or at the semi-annual parties, where they will happily chat for hours. Just not so much when there’s a job to do. They like to work first, then chat later.
If you’re planning a large project in Denmark that will cost multiple million kroner and bringing in a group of internationals to help, it makes sense to invest in a cultural workshop or seminar at the beginning, 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 problems begin to arise.
