Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the CCCAOE Conference in Palm Desert, CA. The sessions were engaging and highlighted the critical connection between education and careers. Three key takeaways stood out: 1️⃣ Teaching both the ethics and practical applications of AI are essential to prepare a future-ready workforce. 2️⃣ Alternative education pathways—like pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, and work-based learning—are increasingly valued by today’s generation and align with labor market demands. 3️⃣ Climate-action jobs are becoming a clear focus in the workforce conversation. What’s especially interesting is the alignment with topics discussed at a workforce development conference I attended in September. The overlap between these two spaces shows how synergy between education and workforce development can drive real impact, paving the way for a vibrant and equitable economy in California. #WorkforceDevelopment #FutureOfWork #AIinEducation #ClimateActionJobs #Apprenticeships #EducationAndCareers #EquityInEducation #LifelongLearning https://lnkd.in/ga-UxSi4

Looking for work, preparing a resume, interviewing, and landing a job is a learned skill – everyone starts somewhere. For young adults without confidence or family support, or simply never having had a job before, the challenge is ever greater. This year, our 18th Summer effort, the Northern Virginia Educating Youth Through Employment (EYE) Program reached over 180 young adults and placed them into jobs where they earned some money and gained new confidence in their work attitudes. All of our Northern Virginia EYE Young Adults was provided a LinkedIn Learning License to explore new skills and to continue building their education efforts for the year ahead. Our Northern Virginia Program emphasizes gaining new skills through direct work experience and adding value to an employer’s organization. In my luncheon address to the EYE graduates, I quoted Dr. Martin Luther King by noting “If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven played music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well.” There is so much need for these types of work experience programs for young adults, both in Northern Virginia, all of Virginia and and across the United States. Let’s make this effort a national priority.

Factors such as experience, confidence, desire to fit in with workplace practices, cultural norms, fear of questioning the status quo, and immature cognitive ability to assess hazards and risks collectively impact the safety of young workers AND the duties of employers. A one size fits all approach is a safety management system failure.
Do you employ apprentices or workers aged between 15-24? Now ask yourself, would you work for you? Young workers have the highest chance of being injured in the first six months of starting a new job, often due to their lack of experience and being new to the role. Take steps to reduce the risk of injury, including delivering adequate training and promoting a safe workplace culture for young workers. To learn more, visit https://lnkd.in/g9QTR-6G
