3 Ways #NTDs like #leprosy can impact people emotionally: ➡️ ANXIETY AND STRESS - NTDs can create uncertainty around health, finances, and the future. People with NTDs are often stigmatized and isolated due to fear. This can be very stressful to navigate. ➡️ GRIEF - Someone with leprosy might grieve the loss of life as they once knew it, including lost jobs, relationships, mobility, and independence. ➡️ HOPELESSNESS – In areas with weakened healthcare systems, treatment for leprosy is often unavailable. Without access to care, those with leprosy can experience hopelessness and despair. We believe that no one affected by NTDs like leprosy, should feel invisible, hopeless, or forgotten. Together with our partners, we strive to find and treat individuals with leprosy who might otherwise be overlooked. In 2023, CHWs took this mission even further by integrating Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) surveys into behavioral health visits, identifying patients needing personalized resource navigation. The results? ✔️ 71 households assisted with critical needs like utility and rent assistance, food insecurity, shelter navigation, and more ✔️ In-person clinic appointments for easier access to CHWs ✔️ Same-day support during behavioral health visits A common patient need: help with medical forms to prevent utility shut-offs for those with refrigerated medications or applying for reduced-cost energy bills. Our CHWs stay connected to county resources and bring that knowledge directly to our patients — creating better outcomes for our communities every step of the way. Together, we’re proving that healthcare is about more than medicine — it’s about addressing the whole person and the barriers they face every day.
