The #DOE investment of $365 million to fund #solar and #batterystorage installations to power critical healthcare facilities and common areas in multi-family housing in Puerto Rico is not only a sound investment in a more resilient grid, but an investment in #energy equity. Due to #climatechange, hurricanes and intense weather events are becoming more frequent and more destructive, and a more resilient grid system that enables power storage is essential. As more #insurance companies restrict or abandon coverage in our most vulnerable areas, I expect these types of energy systems will become more prevalent.

The Ontario Energy Association (OEA) is proud to support the Government of Ontario’s efforts to accelerate housing connections to the electricity grid. “The government’s plan to reduce barriers to connecting new housing to the electricity grid will help reduce costs for new homeowners, renters and businesses.” Said Vince Brescia, President and CEO of the OEA. Key proposals include: · Extending the revenue horizon for residential developments from 25 to 40 years to spread infrastructure costs. · Clarifying conditions for local distribution companies regarding development connections. · Creating a new capacity allocation model for multi-customer, multi-year projects. With a goal of building 1.5 million homes by 2031, the OEA and its members are ready to collaborate with Minister Stephen Lecce and the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to ensure smooth implementation of these new measures. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that ACEEE and a team of partners was selected to receive $3.6 million to work with six states to develop and adopt stronger residential building energy codes. With three sets of progressively stronger codes, the effort will culminate with codes that achieve zero-emissions new homes.  In coalition with Enterprise Community Partners, NASEO - National Association of State Energy Officials, and the New Buildings Institute, ACEEE will work with California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Washington to adopt and implement cutting-edge building codes for new homes, significantly lowering utility bills for residents. Last week we received great news from the DOE that NYPA’s grant proposal was selected to receive up to $43M in the coming few years. This funding from DOE for NYPA’s work in historically disadvantaged communities will provide much-needed resources for career pathways and energy efficiency projects to help ensure that all residents are benefitting from the clean energy transition. #cleanenergy #climatechange #justtransition #environmentaljustice

On January 1, 2025, Puerto Rico experienced a massive New Year's Eve blackout, leaving over 1.3 million customers without power due to a failure of an underground power line. As Luma Energy worked to restore power—reporting near-complete restoration by January 3—the incident highlighted a critical need for sustainable solutions to the island's recurring electricity issues, exacerbated since Hurricane Maria’s devastation in 2017. This situation serves as a wake-up call for stakeholders in renewable energy, particularly solar and storage solutions. The recurring outages underscore not only aging infrastructure but also the pressing need for innovative energy systems that can withstand and respond to challenges. The potential of solar storage systems emerges as a beacon of hope; these technologies could provide a reliable alternative to the fragile grid, enabling communities to harness energy even during outages. However, widespread adoption of solar storage isn't without hurdles. High upfront costs remain a significant barrier, alongside the pressing need for a robust infrastructure to support these systems at scale. Without addressing these challenges, the transition to renewables could stagnate, leaving regions like Puerto Rico vulnerable to future power disruptions. Governors Pierluisi and González Colón, along with former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's calls for federal support, bring to light the essential role of governmental investment and policy frameworks in driving the transition toward renewable energy. Now more than ever, it's vital for businesses, policymakers, and industry leaders to collaborate on creating scalable solutions that ensure energy resilience across the island. In my neighborhood, (and all around Austin) they are digging up the streets to replace aging water lines and gas lines. California took a different route with gas lines...don't bother...Just Electrify Everything! Brilliant!
