Veterans who are encountering the justice system often have very complex needs and may experience issues with housing, relationships, addiction, and a loss of faith in society and the systems that govern it. This is where our volunteer mentors come in. Working with our service users for 12 months before and after their release, these mentors play a crucial role in preparing veterans for reintegration into society. Mentors support our service users and work with them to break destructive patterns and change the trajectory of their future for the better after their eventual release. Being a mentor is challenging yet massively rewarding. Our volunteer mentors have helped service users achieve life-changing results, and those who become mentors find that the experience pushes them to develop their skills in perseverance, empathy, and resilience. Is this going to work? I'm very very curious. Some points and counter-points to consider: 1. It's a beloved franchise with a rabid and demographically diverse audience. 2. It's anime, but also kinda not? I say this because it's not the kind of anime where fans have already adored it as a TV series franchise. Even though Demonslayer, Dragonball, or My Hero Academia all had surprsingly strong theatrical adapations, people knew the story, design, and set-up and came specifically for the next chapter. This is has most of that but with a new and unproven design and animation approach, so, I'm not sure if it should be comped against other anime features or traditional non-2D animated features. 3. The production quality is very high for anime. But, it will also feel weirdly low in comparison to the LOTR movies and the recent Rings of Power Prime series - which hasn't seemed to earn the franchise extra momentum. It reminds me of Sword of the Stranger. Some aspects of that are absolutely feature film quality. While other parts feel more like good TV episode production. That's fine for watching at home. But feels weird to pay a theatrical ticket price for. 4. For its release date of Dec. 13th, it literally only competes against Sony's Kraven the Hunter. But the week after that, it will likely get crushed under the noise of Sonic 3 and Mufasa. 5. There seems to be very little marketing. Has anyone seen anything of note? The spend feels more appropriate to a streaming release. 6. It's dark. As in the whole thing looks like the Long Night episode in the last season of Game of Thrones and did I see a little Rotocsoping around Min 1:30-1:38? Will audiences be in the mood for this during the height of Christmas season? And will old farts like me compare this to good old Ralph Bakshi's 1978 adaptation - which BTW starred John Hurt as Aragorn and Anthony Daniels as Legolas! That's right, C-3PO was Legolas! Personally, I don't think I'll make a trip to the theater. But that's only because there's no way I'll be able to drag my wife and two daughters to it (they're 3 and 10 months).
