As we embrace the spirit of the festive season, I find it a perfect time to reflect on some of the “grey zones” we navigate in our professional journeys, especially in fields like #digitalmedicine. One such area is the evolving conversation around how we assign value to #Software_as_a_Medical_Device (SaMDs) in terms of their impact on clinical outcomes. While robust clinically meaningful benchmarks are a cornerstone of evaluation, the regulatory landscape worldwide reveals an intriguing variety of approaches—some stringent, others more flexible. This diversity underscores the importance of fostering constructive dialogue across stakeholders. How do we strike a balance between innovation and rigor? How do we ensure that SaMDs are not only impactful and appropriately valued but also held to the highest standards of safety? At the same time, it’s essential to recognize the remarkable progress made by the scientific community, the healthcare sector, industry, and regulators. The abundance of regulatory instruments already available serves as a testament to the collective effort to refine these frameworks. These steps forward provide a solid foundation upon which we can continue to build. During this reflective time of year, I encourage us all to approach these questions with open minds and collaborative spirits. The future of digital medicine is being shaped by these discussions, and it’s an exciting, if challenging, journey. To those working tirelessly to refine these frameworks and to the innovators pushing boundaries, colleagues, friends, and those who we strive to make their care pathways smooth and efficient, I wish you a peaceful and happy 2025 filled with meaningful progress.
