In October, I had discussions with grade 9 learners and their parents about the complexities of subject choice as this is the time of year when schools require their learners to choose their subjects for the FET phase (grades 10 – 12). Choosing your subjects is often a difficult task because it sets the tone for your tertiary studies and/or career pathway. However, a subject choice assessment can help make this decision-making process a little bit easier. As someone who has worked in a university setting as a career counsellor, I would sometimes see prospective students for academic guidance. This entailed helping the learner figure out what courses they can apply for based on their current school results but also ensuring that the course recommendation aligns with their field of interest. In this role, I had observed one of two occurrences: 1. The learner unfortunately had not taken the subject/s required for admission (usually Mathematics, Physical Science, and/or Life Science). 2. The learner took the correct subjects for admission, but their APS (Admission Point Score) does not meet the minimum requirement. Thankfully, by the end of the consultation, the learner and I would reach an agreement regarding possible alternatives. However, both aforementioned occurrences could have been minimised by a learner undergoing a subject choice assessment before beginning their FET phase (grades 10 – 12). This assessment is used to recommend which subjects to take based on ability, academic history, personality, and vocational interest. Additionally, it could ensure an optimal subject combination, potentially maximising a learner’s APS based on their vocational interests and academic strengths. A subject choice assessment is valuable for any learner as it enables them to begin their career journey on the right foot. Furthermore, it allows them to be actively involved in their career choices from grade 9, thus motivating them to perform well in the FET phase so that they can pursue their vocational interests upon matriculation. #subjectchoice ✍ 🖥️

Warning: assessment nerd post! I had such a great meeting yesterday with our interim graduate program coordinator to review and update our program learning outcomes in the Master’s of Education. We were able to find the assignments in the core courses that will serve as measures for the PLOs. Then got feedback from faculty who teach those courses and incorporated that into the new A Plan. This is where my old job (assessment coordinator) and my new job (faculty) intersect! #umd #assessmentallies #alignment #assessmentismyjam #closetheloop
